Post subject:  Water Pump (wires connecting to it)

I have two wires connecting into the top of what I deem the Water Pump (top left hand device on fan belt, with pipes connected to it (when looking from the front)), one of the wires has been totally destroyed by seemingly the fan belt or failure thereof in the past.

Does anyone know what the device is that is connected to these wires and what the consiquence of it not functioning would be (I suspect a sensor)?

The wire can not be repaired as it has been eaten away down to the "sensor", so replacement of the "sensor" would be the only option and before doing that I need to know what it does and can I live without it.

Only odd symptom I have on my Jeep is that the temp gauge more often then not reads 1/4. Only on hot days/under load or city driving does it sit at just under 1/2 (where I expect it to be).

( 2002 2.5 CRD, identical in almost every way to the 2.8 )

Thanks

That's the viscous heat pump, used for addtional heating for the cabin in winter climes - the wires would be power and ground for the electric clutch - you may be able to remove the clutch - it's identical to the clutch on the air conditioner compressor - to make that wire more accessible, then splice it - if you don't experience ambient temps below ~50deg, you may not even need the device - the engine doesn't care if the passengers don't.

And, BTW - welcome to the forum............... :)

Thanks, while my wife may think our winter temps require heating, I love the cold and hate car heaters. I will leave it as is.

Our absolute lowest winter temp in this area is ~ 23°F (but these temps climb quickly as morning breaks, I doubt I will experience them)
