The jeep wouldn't start this morning for the first time due to hideously cold temperature. -33C! When I pulled the engine cover off to get at the block heater cord it shattered. Any bets on whether the dealer will replace it under warranty?

If you haven't already done so find your block heater cord before you need it

There is some on that took thier engine cover off. Maybe one of them will ship you thiers if you want it. Won't hurt to ask. Broken cover I don't think would be cover by warranty because of accident or abuse disclaimer.

just guessing, but I think he means the heater cord, and I bet it's not covered, and the wait for replacement is roughly equal to the remaining sub-zero weather

Never the less, the insulation on the heater cord should be good at very low temps (-33c=-26f). What is the sense of having a cold weather product that does not function in the cold? The insulation could just as well have broken if he had started the vehicle and driven away. Jeep should cover that under waranty, but probably won't.

Sorry I wasn't clear in my first post. It was the engine cover that broke. Once I got the heater cord untied from the dipstick tube it worked fine.

Yep, plastic gets brittle and breaks easy in sub-zero temperature among other things. That why I keep small body parts cover and warm whenever possible.  Not what your think I'm thinking.
