Post subject:  Rough Shifting
I guess I am wondering if I should be concerned and take the truck in to have it looked at and possibly serviced. It seems lately that when it shifts from 2nd to 3rd it is not relatively smooth like the other shifts. Oh, btw, the truck is an automatic. It feels like someone is dumping the clutch on a manual and you get a little jerk.

Any ideas?

When mine shifts from 3rd to 4th (545RFE) I get a jerk everytime. I can make the jerk less if I back off the throttle.

I have no jerk when going into 3rd gear not with O/D off or not.

What year?? Did you recently disconnect the battery for some reason? The TCM has to relearn after the battery is disconnected for any length of time. I've found that it tends to be a bit crisper shifts until it has a couple of cycles on it.

Hello there

I found this procedure in the service manual for the 2006 CRD (p. 831):

"LEARN A SMOOTH 2-3 AND 3-4 UPSHIFT
NOTE: The transmission oil temperature must be above 43° C (110° F).
Use the following steps to have the TCM learn the OD and 4C CVI’s.
1. Accelerate the vehicle from a stop at a steady 15 degree throttle opening and perform multiple 1-2, 2-3, and 3-4
upshifts. The 2nd 2-3 shift following a restart or shift to reverse will be shown during the shift as a value between
the 1st 2-3 OD CVI and the normal OD CVI. Updates to the normal OD CVI will occur after the 2nd shift into 3rd
gear, following a restart or shift to reverse.
2. Repeat Step 1 until the 2-3 and 3-4 shifts become smooth and the OD and 4C CVI become stable."

By the way bugnout, I noticed you have Moab wheels with 245/75 - do you have any rubbing or did you do any trimming for the front wheels?

2005 with almost 23,000 miles. Battery has not been disconnected anytime recently.

Rubbed some without the lift. I beat down the pinch weld, that eliminated most of the rubbing at stock height. I added the daystar lift and no rubbing at all.

On Topic, I'll have to try that procedure out next time I disconnect the battery and need to retrain the TCM.

Disconnect the battery NEGATIVE cable for a few minutes - just B4 reconnecting, I short the negative cable to the positive cable for a second to ensure full 0volts RESET - connect the NEGATIVE cable, then go for a drive at normal in-traffic acceleration rate, stopping several times so the trans shifts thru the 1-2-3-4 gears - 'nuther words, no full-throttle acceleration/time runs - TCM\ECM will learn the procedure as smoothly as you teach it
