Greetings,

While starting my car, I happened to catch in the blink of an eye, the water in fuel sensor light came on and
went off while also noticing the engine rpm dropping from well, below idle. However, the light went out and
the engine came to idle with no further problems. I know there is probably varied opinions on whether the
WIF sensor really prevents problems or by the time it comes on the damage is done. Since it only came
on for a second, should I have the dealer check the fuel system?

I think the dealer would only figure a way to charge you lots of money and do very little if anything -
water in fuel is a reason to refuse warranty.
I think the WIF sensor is relatively insensitive so if it goes off at all -
my first response would be to change the fuel filter, and if you've had a starting, driving problems - add some type of fuel conditioner
Power Service - or something similar. Make sure to pull a large sample of fuel in a clean jar - if it is water in fuel and there is damage -
you'll need the sample analysis to get your money back from the fuel supplier.

Put a small jar under the water in fuel sensor and drain some of the fuel out of the bottom. Cap the jar and set it aside then go ahead and change the fuel filter. If there was water in the filter you will see it as a water bubble under the fuel in the bottom of the jar after sitting overnight. Some of the Racor units have the glass jar bottom as part of the filter. Besides freezing up and blocking fuel flow, water will swell up the filter fibers and restrict flow causing running problems.
