DC balking on burnt fuel heater plug/air leak under MAX Care

For the last several weeks I've noticed that my 05 CRD has been cranking longer before starting, maybe as long as 3-4 seconds. Yesterday after starting it immediately died and would not start again. Thanks to all the problem sharing on this web site, I suspected that perhaps the problem was air in the injection system. Sure enough I was able to pump the primer a number of times before it got firm. I then rounded up the 11mm box and got lots of air out of the bleed screw. After this it started immediately. So I began to check around and pulled the heater plug which as you might guess wet with fuel and burnt. I had one other time last night where I had to bleed the injection system before it would start.

So this morning it went into the dealer. I just got off the phone with the service department and we finally have a meeting of minds that having raw fuel in the heater connector is a problem and the melted puck probably opened up a path for more air leakage. The problem is the service guy maintains that some of the parts/work is covered by MAX Care and some isn't. When I pressed him, he was unable to provide any details. What gives? The only thing I can think of is perhaps DC is saying that the fuel filter and the labor to attach it to the new filter head isn't covered? To his credit he doesn't understand why and is attempting to get it all covered. BTW they don't have all the parts in stock. I would have thought a new head, new filter and new connector and 1/2 labor would have covered it.

Has anyone that has had this repair done under the extended warranty run into problems getting the whole bill (minus the deductable) covered?

They covered mine under the extended warranty -
I didn't take it in until the turbo hose blew so the $100 deductable covered hoses and fuel head/filter - and it was in stock. (they deal with several CRD's in the area)

probably not covering the new filter and labor because it comes pre-installed on the head........ if i remember right.

If they don't want to put it in, Just have them give you one with a new filter. You can swap it out yourself with one box wrench, a hex driver for the hose clamps and your fingers for the electric clips. I'd be surprised if it was more than 30 minutes work for someone who's never done it before.

I offered to swap it out myself and they did not want the humiliation of having a DIY do it faster than they could.

Of course, I would cheat and use my electric fuel pump to purge the air:!:

I had some smoke coming from my heater plug connection. I took it right to the dealer and showed the service manager and he just looked at it and said he would get back to me later. The next day I got a call telling me my part was in so I drove in he took me to the parts counter and handed me a new fuel filter head unit and told me it was mine all I had to do was install it and bring him the old one for a full credit . The cost was 155.00 I went home swapped the parts returned the old part got my full credit done. Very happy no problem since if it happens again I will just put on a racor 245 unit. I think after telling him about our lost kj website he read all about the heater problems some of us have been having and decided some good will was in order.

That's pretty refreshing. Where is that dealer so others in the area can benefit from the competence?

It is a dealer in Overland Park Ks named Overland Park Jeep since 1974 they used to be a AMC dealer and also a Renault dealer remember the little Le Car back in the 70s early 80s.

I got my CRD back from the dealer this evening. They replaced the filter head and spliced in a new heater plug. This was done under the extended warranty so I don't have an accurate total cost. I only had to pay the $100 deductible.

It's worth noting that the Jeep now starts almost instantly, like it did several months ago. Even my wife noticed and commented on this difference. If your CRD is cranking longer before starting, check for air in the fuel filter and check you heater plug.
