LOST JEEPS :: View topic - Dirty Fuel Filter Symptoms? Other possibilities?

I was driving my CRD tonight and something seemed slightly off. The engine seems to be running ok and there's no CEL. But under acceleration it's almost like it starts to shudder. At different speeds...and especially if I get it up around 1500-2000 rpm and just keep it as stead at a constant RPM as possible it just continues to shudder, almost like it's struggling to keep it's power there. When I back off the throttle and coast along it feels totally fine...no shudder and rides smooth. If it's in neutral and revving it up it's also ok.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

If it goes away after a little while, thats exactly what's going on with my jeep. The dealership has had it almost 2 months and still hasn't found the problem.

Those are the symptoms of a dirty fuel filter. The engine's getting starved for fuel under high fuel demand. Swap it out. Check for the standard fuel heater leak while you're at it.

Drove it again this morning and at first seemed like it would be ok. But then it started to shudder/vibrate, you can even feel it a bit in the steering wheel, as I did a slow but constant acceleration (not as noticeable with a pedal to the floor acceleration). I felt it most from 30-40 MPH up to 60 and haven't pushed it past that and it feels like it's only getting 90% of its power when its showing these symptoms. Everything else seemed the same though, come off the throttle and as smooth as silk. Rev in neutral and everything sounded/felt fine. Still sound like a dirty fuel filter? I hope that's it. Quick/easy fix.

When this happens with large trucks, the usual culprit is clogging in the fuel filter or air in the system. Sounds like a filter change and occasionally bleeding the air out of the filter head would be a good measure. I usually check for air every week or so in my CRD and bleed it out. Due to the elevated nature of the filter head and no fuel/air separator, air in the fuel tends to migrate to the highest point, which is the filter head. At the pressures the fuel is fed to the rail, even the slightest amount of air will cause a sluggishness or shudder to occur under power. The little 2.8 in our CRD's are so similar in this regard to large truck diesels. I occasionally get this with my Cummins ISX. A filter change takes care of it. MPG changes will also let you know if a filter is getting to be a problem. MPG's will tend to drop when a filter is reaching the end of its service life. could be something more than this, but it is a good place to start.

I have not seen it im my CRD (yet) but when I had my rabbit diesel, the sign of a clogged fuel filter was white smoke from the exhaust. I would assume that the smoke issue applies to the CRD as well

Oddly enough it stopped. Silky smooth again. Is it possible I had a tank of bad fuel? It seemed to go away after I filled up again. Any other suggestions?
