For the last few days, the KJ has been what I can only describe as feeling "heavy" and sluggish. The Scangauge has not shown any MPG mileage over 21/22 ish, and the rest of the displays (GPH, LOD, MAP) haven't shown anything of any strange sort, other than the GPH seeming to be a bit high even at idle. The MPG would usually go to 9999 when I took my foot off the pedal and coasted, not totally unexpected, but it doesn't normally do that. Also, the MPG reading did not seem to read goofy numbers when the cruise was engaged. Then tonight, the car suddenly (and I mean like flipping a switch while I was driving) started feeling zippy again. The MPG reading (verified by the EVIC) started talking about 30+ when I was running at 50-55 mph with the converter locked... And started reading goofy high numbers again when the cruise was on, like when I first got the SG. So here's the question: Could the SG be causing this "heavy and sluggish" operational feeling, or is it simply reporting what the ECU is telling it? Once it "woke up" tonight, I could actually hear the turbo spooling for the first time in days, especially when I nailed it to pass some cars. LOTS more acceleration than it had even this morning, and I haven't changed anything. I also ran for a few days without the SG connected with the same sluggish feel, so I'm inclined to think its not the SG. So what could cause something like this? If it was my Jetta... I'd suspect the MAF sensor. Those things were notoriously buggy, and of course, didn't actually throw any kind of code when they were dying, but not totally dead. Thoughts? |

What does the AE indicate, far as fuel rate, timing, rail pressure, Boost, etc? |

This might not help (great start for a post eh?) - only heard this from 3rd person. I have heard people having strange issues when using an SG with the CRDs. Transmission problems mostly (not locking up, or shifting down a gear suddenly). Try to run the KJ without the SG connected for a while, see if that helps you some. |

Uffe, I'm aware of the transmission issues, thats more of a "children all shouting at once" kinda thing, which causes the trans to reboot which violently kicks it out of gear. I've had that, but not in the last day or so. gmctd... Fuel rates seem especially high, like 8-10gph at 50-55mph, while map is only reading 21/22, so about 6-7psi. I can't read rail pressure with the SG, I guess I could load up the AE and read the rail... Oh, I'm a Beavis. I didn't see you were saying read the stuff with the AE. Doh! When I'm on the way home tonight, I'll try and read that stuff for more info. I am thinking that I'm going to first clean the MAF (it's that one sensor with the 4mm socket that gets full of gook, right?) or whatever that sensor is, as after 40k miles (and only the last 8k or so with any biodiesel that I know for sure about) I'm sure that it's fully gooked. At the same time, I'm going to look at the entire intake line and see if there is anything obvious. The behavior was happening again this morning, but seemed to go away after the engine had warmed up, which I don't remember it doing before. When it was sluggish before, it didn't seem to matter if the engine was cold or not, and when it felt zippy last night, the engine was cold after sitting out in the sun all day on set. The low boost levels make me think this is like the VW, which would reduce the VNT boost to about 5psi when it was in limp mode, b/c the MAF wasn't reading correctly. What MAF do these use, and how expensive is it? |

Thats the MAP sensor, top right of the engine, under the wire harness. 1 bolt holds it in, watch the lock washer under it, can be lost easy. It is Bosch made. Not not much money if it is bad but probably only needs to be cleaned. The MAF you mention is in the airbox, can clean it as well while you are at it. Use Sensor safe cleaner here. MAP can use carb cleaner on it. Good luck let us know Steve |

The MAF is in the airbox? Then what do we unplug for the ORM? I thought that was the MAF connector. I could be wrong, I'm not under the hood right now (and haven't been in a while, so my memory is a bit fuzzy about the layout) But I do remember the ORM which I did for a while before I built my SEGR, and I thought it was on the passenger side about midway toward the front of the block, or that general vicinity. |

Mass Air Flow sensor is in the air duct between the airbox and the compressor inlet - Manifold Air Pressure (Boost) sensor is in the intake manifold top rear, combined with the Air Intake Temperature sensor - MAF gets dusty dirty - MAP gets sooty oily gunky dirty - clean the MAF with air - clean the MAP\AIT sensor with Diesel fuel, paint thinner, WD-40 (one of the very few good uses for that stuff), carb spray, etc |

If you disconnect the MAP sensor on the engine you'll be in limp home mode for sure with no boost / limited boost. For the SEGR stuff you unplug the MAF sensor in the airbox. |

Odd, I thought the MAP would stop the EGR and not cause a limp mode... |

MAF effects EGR only, incl AFCv\TV - engine will run just fine without the MAF MAP effects all Bosch CRD injection parameters, incl CP3 Inj Pump rail pressure, fuel rates, timing, Boost, etc, starting with Baro - you name it, it's gonna go limp with no MAP input - even the headlites are gonna be dim............. |

These are also the symptoms of stuck VGT vanes. Get it good and hot and run a few passes up and down the road at WOT so the engine gets really wound up then let off the pedal completely. Do a few cycles like this and any soot clogging the vanes will be blown out. I hope that it is this or something equally simple. |

I got it now ![]() On my euro model I don't have a MAF. I still have EGR though ![]() |

Well this is interesting! Pulled the engine cover (and that's not going back for a while, I like to look at my engines!) and pulled the MAP out... Man what an oily mess! It was filled with glop, took me almost a full can of brake cleaner to get it washed out. Also cleaned the MAF using some spray electronic contact cleaner that I had, and the car felt like I had installed a new engine! Much happiness here! As a side note, the tire sensor seems to have FINALLY cleared itself (after 2 weeks!) although I still don't know what was going on with it. At this point, I'm looking for a DRBIII or I might be talking to AE about letting them do some development with mine so that more actuation codes can be created. Not being able to play with the functions really bothers me. |
