Post subject:  Alternator pulley
Changed the alternator pulley wheel today ,job was really easy .First i removed the serpentine belt by placing a 17mm spanner on the spring loaded tensioner and applying pressure in the direction of the battery.Then it was just a matter of removing the battery cable,and both wires going to the alternator.Two bolts hold the alternator in place a 15mm and an allen key one.Removed alternator from vehicle and placed on a bench ,the next part is really easy if you have access to an air powered socket gun.Using a male socket (similar to an allen key not sure what they are called) a quick blast of the air gun in an anti clockwise direction removes the pulley .Without air tools the job would be much harder as you would have to try and lock the alternator shaft before trying to loosen .Fitted a new serpentine belt whilst i was at it for peace of mind.Absolutley made up with the result ,much less noise from engine bay. Cost me £115 for pulley wheel and belt from stealership.But i'm very happy with the noise reduction :D .

Good job - note your current mileage at this install, then post the mileage when the new one first begins making noises - that should indicate probable service life, incl requirement for replacement - ours is chirping fairly loudly, sorta like the 500lb canary, but the belt still looks 'new' after washing it

FYI: the original serp belt makes a good emergency spare, stored in the storage compartment with the other storables.

Try it - you'll like it.................

It's his son's - he only get to work on it :) :) :)

(and he's show no interest in adopting more KJ's to work on)

but I'm sure his Cummins - (pickup) has a storage compartment.

I was less fortunate. My impact wrench would not remove the pulley; it just spun up the armature. I had to split the alternator to secure the armature in a vice so I could use a breaker bar. It was really on there. The problem with using an impact wrench is that it is virtually impossible to accurately control the torque when reinstalling the pulley. That being said, if I had gotten it off with the impact wrench I would have put it back on the same way. The good news is that this alternator is very easy to split and just takes a few minutes to separate and put back together.
