amen, that is what I have been hoping for all along, bio-diesel-electric and you are free of the oil barons.

well, 'cept for the filling stations, haul trucks, processing, etc....

now if they can get bio-d from algae living off emissions of gas fired power gen plants we'll have something.

The Germans designed a kick-arse diesel SUV with the Touareg, but their idiot marketing types decided that the ONLY version that should come here would have TWO engines in it instead of the equally-capable european version with only 5 cylinders.

Yep, I gots a Vee TEN engine in mah VeeDub truck, an yew know it done out run Clems old Ferd Powderpuff cuz his only gots 8 cylinders! hyuk hyuk hyuk!

Yea... A UNIBODY SUV that is limited to 7000 lbs towing, not b/c of the engine, but b/c of the unibody. The inline-5 diesel has the exact same tow rating and design as the V-10, they just glued two of them together for us fat-assed Americans.

I want to go to Germany and bring one back... But the dang thing won't fit in the overhead compartment. So I got a Jeep that weighs almost as much, and isn't anywhere near the "creature comfort" level of the Touareg... But it's a good option for now: It's a diesel.

ROFL! Great way to explain why they opted for the V10.

I would have loved to have a V10 Touareg :D

I saw one (not sure of engine) participating in the recent beach tour we had this weekend in Denmark. Didn't see how it performed. Have heard lots of stories about how awful it does in terrain. Probably started by old farts having to live with their old nissans and toyotas and don't recognize electricity as a very elegant way of controlling stuff :)

Very nice. I do miss the "almost 50mpg" I used to turn, even with my chipped TDI. Problem is, I'm building a house in some pretty rugged terrain and I need at least one 4WD (assuming Wife doesn't leave the house from December thru March). :D

Maybe we could each buy the TDI and swap parts? I have no need for the V10, other than "compensation" and the mileage penalty is stupid. For the vehicle's weight, the 5 cylinder is just fine.

And I miss the mileage I was getting from my non-chipped Jetta TDI. I would get a SOLID 35mpg out of it, even flogging it constantly. Only things I modded on the engine was killing that EGR and CCV (boy that sounds familiar!) and put in some of Kerma's nozzles. And that car was FAST!
