Post subject:  F37 pump question

I am sure this has been asked before, but I wasnt able to turn up anything in the search.

Since the F37 was supposed to replace the oil pump, is this newer pump available elsewhere?
Is it better or just a band-aid like the replacement TC?

I am getting close to dropping $$ on a Suncoast TC and just wondered if the new pump was a necessity.

Thanks

Dealers were not required to replace it with the new version, so if you have F37 it's no guarantee that you have it. You can buy it from the dealer though, search around here for the part number.

Here's how ya tell: the early cover will seal to the aluminum hub on the pump, with the torque convertor seal inside the hub - the factory upgrade front cover seal will ride directly on the t\c drive-hub - that early pump can be easily modified with a hacksaw: pull it from the case, separate the front\rear covers, saw the hub extension off the front half cover, clean out the aluminum chips, reassemble, and yer good to go - all that is then needed is the new front cover\seal which is modified to seal to the t\c drive-hub - or just have yer fav trans shop replace the pump and cover and be done with it - pump and cover p\n's are in the Suncoast upgrade thread.......................

Hey little off topic here but I was wondering with evey one upgrading to the Suncoast TC. Has anybody actually had their TC grenade on them? Just wondering.

My ex had her tranny rebuilt at 10K or 12K cause the TC took a stinky poo can. it still worked,
just made noise and threw chards of metal through the tranny... i would suspect that given
a bit more time it would have failed completely. there is one guy on here that his crapped
out totally, locked up the back tires and made coming to a stop an adventure.

I think most of the problems came from some of the Trannies came with a low fluid level. thus
causing some travel with an empty or nearly empty TC.

Mine hasn't imploded, but I plan on getting a camper this summer, so I figured I would change it out ahead of time.

GMTDC: Could you put an arrow on a photo showing where to cut the front hub extension off?

Thanks,

Steve

Note the modified pump cover on the right, with collar removed - you can see the input sleeve bearing just below the edge of the machined surface - it is important that you do not remove collar below that point - in fact, you can see the shiny machined surface where the collar was cut, just inside that is the uncut original surface, so that should give you some idea of limit - also note the uneven cut, indicating the cover was not trued horizontally.

Now, note the oem cover on the left with the original collar and tc seal - remove that material so the new outer cover\seal will fit

Original and upgraded covers shown in the next pics

How's that - clear enuff?

Post subject:  Might be able to mill it off?

GMTDC: I have an antique (Brown & Sharpe converted line shaft) Horizontal Milling machine with a vertical head (Tree). Do you see any reason the hub cant be milled off?

Thanks in advance,

Steve

Only unless you'd prefer hacksawing it off - milling it would indeed be best, but how many KJ'ers keep a spare mill in their back yard, under their fav shade tree, eh.................

I shudder to think of all the good pumps that were scrapped during F37 - what have we got, at least 15-17000 KJ CRD's out there? It's a crying shame.

Besides the hub extension, are there any other differences (to include internal architecture) between the old pump and the new pump? Should one be sought over the other based on the answer to the first question, especially if one is considering upgrading to the Suncoast TC?

Thanks,

Jim

None - that collar is strictly for the outer shield\cover seal and the t\c drive-hub seal - the Transgo shift kit supplies several replacement springs for the valve and regulator in the pump, which wear abnormally due to being in a horizontal bore - other than that, if the front cover is still available as a separate part, the price of the machinwork in removing the collar would be the determining factor, aamopo

I bought a new early-style cover shield off eBay for show'n'tell, and I've been looking for a complete pump to do some s'n't with, but no luck, so far - did find a source of the early defective oil filters, advised him of the liabilities of selling those as functional and to contact a dealer for verification, whereupon he pulled them from his auction.

Refresher: those filters p\n4799662 were made by Wix - DCJ switched to Purolator, but something was lost in translation, so Purolator was supplying filters with no anti-drain valve - same color, same 4799662 p\n, not the same function - so, a year later, DCJ finally knuckled under, created a new 5179267 p\n, pulled all the original p\n's from the shelf(s), as no way to distinguish the good from the bad and the ugly - several eBay vendors got aholt of those and have been "auctioning" them off to an unsuspecting unknowing public - but I know - and now you know.....the rest...of the story.
