Post subject:  Proper Engine Oil Level?

Ok, I am going to ask a relatively easy question.

When looking at the oil dipstick there is a short ribbed area, followed by a short flat smooth area, followed by the rest of the dipstick being ribbed again.

Where along the dipstick should the proper oil level fall?

Short answer is: It depends. There are lots of folks whose dipsticks always show low even when the exact 6.4 qt (US) have been added. Mine tend to run just about right. One way to be sure is to do an oil change. After draining the system all the way, fill with the prescribed amount, run it and let it warm up, then let it cool down (multiple hours or overnight). Check it once it's cool and scribe yourself a little reference mark on the stick.

One thing to watch out for is technicians who fill according to the dipstick instead of the manual, you'll typically end up with an overfill condition that might cause oil pressure to run high but at the least will tend to give you a lot of venting out your CCV (install a filter there, yet?).

I just put in 6 quarts, I don't think being down 1/2 a quart is going to have any adverse effects. When I check the level after an oil change its at the add line when it goes a 1/4" below that I add some oil.

Also wait until at least 30 minutes or until it's cool to check because it takes a while for the oil to drain down.

if you check shortly after turning off the engine you will overfill it by ~ a quart and the CCV will blow that oil into your intake.

When I fill approx 6 liters into the KJ I always end up with a slight overfill.

EDIT: Sorry, I meant to say overfill according to the dipstick!

If I fill to the full mark my EHM goes crazy until it shows half way between Full and Add. If I put in 6.4 quarts, it also hits the midway point between Full and Add.

I have similar results. I add 6.4 to 6.3 quarts, and the oil level comes to about 1/8" to 3/16" above the add oil mark. When changing oil, I add the measured amount of oil, then run the engine till the pressure comes up for 2 or 3 minutes, then shut it down and check the oil and get these results. This amount of oil seems to work well, I only get a small amount (4 oz or so) in the Provent between oil changes, and the oil stays at this inbetween level between oil changes. When I first changed oil in this vehicle, I'd add oil till it hit the full mark (7 quarts) but this resulted in large amounts of oil being blown into the Provent. Because of this oil being blown out of the engine, the oil level would drop quickly till it hit the 1/2 way mark. So, apparently 6.3 to 6.4 quarts is all the oil my engine will take without blowing out large amounts.

Check what the dip stick says  It does not say FULL it says MAX  As others have said filling to the MAX will cause oil consumption. Next change put in exactly 6.3 quarts, run the engine then let it sit for half a hour then see where it is on the stick. That's the FULL point :D
