Ok, I am going to ask a relatively easy question.
When looking at the oil dipstick there is a short ribbed area, followed by a short flat smooth area, followed by the rest of the dipstick being ribbed again.
Where along the dipstick should the proper oil level fall?
Short answer is: It depends. There are lots of folks whose dipsticks always show low even when the exact 6.4 qt (US) have been added. Mine tend to run just about right. One way to be sure is to do an oil change. After draining the system all the way, fill with the prescribed amount, run it and let it warm up, then let it cool down (multiple hours or overnight). Check it once it's cool and scribe yourself a little reference mark on the stick.
One thing to watch out for is technicians who fill according to the dipstick instead of the manual, you'll typically end up with an overfill condition that might cause oil pressure to run high but at the least will tend to give you a lot of venting out your CCV (install a filter there, yet?).
