O.K. so I still love the diesel power, but I am having problems with the turbocharger. It works off and on more off than on. also the malfunction light is on. I live on Kodiak island in AK. and there aren't a lot of shops to go to. Can any body help me?

how does a turbo work off and on? lol. last time I checked they run off your engines exhaust.
Ok, Im not a mechanic, nor do I know diesels, but if you can find a boost leak tester online or anywhere, it will save you lots of $$$. I just got rid of a turbo car because it was giving me problems. But if you are working on your own vehicle, or just do some random checks on things. Check for boost leak with one of the testers.
Check all sillicon hoses, and all clamps. all the way through from your air intake to the throttle body. It could be in there somewhere.

What model CRD do you have (year wise)?

Having the turbo work on and off shouldn't be a leak on the hoses, the leak would stay equal or get worse.

Later model 2.8CRD's have the variable vein turbo's, suspect these babies could malfunction.

If the vehicle goes into limp mode (seriously sluggish), it could be that the onboard computer detects something odd with engine (turbo included) and restricts you in limp mode. If the performance mildly changes, then it could be non-computer based.

You need to get the ODB codes behind the CEL.

Have you tried the key method to get the codes displayed?
Turn the ignition to ON, then one click back to OFF repeat this step a further 2 times then turn to ON and write down the Pxxxx codes that display. The key On Off On Off On Off On must be completed within about 5 seconds for this method to work.

If you post the codes you may have better chance of getting assistance.

Sounds like one of the intercooler hoses has come undone. That will cause a surging sensation and trip the SES light. I'd check the condition of the hoses.

Another possibility: If you do a lot of slow-speed, short-trip driving on that island the turbo vanes could be clogged up and not opening and closing properly. If this is the case you can try performing a couple Italian tune-ups: one the engine is warm do some hi-speed wide open throttle runs and hold the pedal to the floor. Letting off the pedal and letting it coast down without brakes after a WOT run also helps clean it out.

It's an 06. I just learned about the variable blade turbo. This makes a lot of sense considering my problem. I am getting two codes -01- and -02-. Does anybody know these codes? I checked for leaks and can't find anything suspicious. I do a lot of stop and go driving because I live on an island, so also does anybody know if the blades in the turbo will get unstuck if I just try to rev the poop out of it? Thanks for all the help.

Don't just rev it, drive it at WOT for as long as is reasonable to blow out the crud under load. Then repeat...

Harborfreightdotcom for an OBD2 scantool, like the cobra@40bucks - post the codes - pull the compressor inlet duct, check the turbine shaft for ease of rotation, wiggle the shaft in\out, up\down, side\side: no blade should hit the scroll at any point - do a vacuum check for 26"HG at idle, make sure none of the hoses are leaking - get back with the results for further.................

Well since your on a island I doubt you can run it long enought at full power to make any difference  And I'll also bet there's no Autozone near by eather :D This past weekend we cleaned the intake on my son't TDI jetta. While it was off I grabbed the actuating lever to see if it was free. Guess what, It would hardly move then no where near full travel. I sprayed it with PB Blaster, every jeep should come with a can  and moved it a few times till it was free. As I understand our turbo's are still a Veriable Geometry Turbo but different then the Variable Vein Turbo on the VW's.

Good input from the other guys. You could go to the Napa store and read the T code. Once everything checks out head to the American river and on that straight away open her up. Also clean the map sensor and do the EHM

Might want to check the vacuum line to the turbo. I had a turbo malfunction and lost power and got CEL. It turned out to be the vacuum line that was the culprit. Replaced it and problem solved.
