Hi Stardreamer,

What's your mileage? How do you know they need replaced (just personal curiosity)?

Back when I had a Shop we found that Monroe had the shortest life. Many shops push needless shock replacement and put in junk that is not the quality of the original equipment. When I had my shop, I never drank that batch of Kool Aid. If your KJ does not drift side ways on wash board roads, bounce excessively after you hit a bump, or bob up and down, you better look elsewhere for what is causing your problem. OEM ball joints are a big problem with the KJ and they have had two recalls, one for cooking out the grease and the other for slop. Moog makes a great replacement and when mine get sloppy Moog is going in. If you do go with Monroe, ask the store if they will put in a vending machine so you don't have to wait for them to open to exchange them :P :P :P :P :P :P :P

Best combo out there is OME - shock/struts/spings - gives about a 2" lift & rides better.

I changed my rear shocks at 20,000 miles because I think they have to much damping.  They weren't worn out.  IMO it makes the ride to uncomfortable,  the front and rear spring rates and shocks are not matched up very well.  The problem with the front is the springs are to soft. It feels mushy and less responsive on road.   The result is the inside of my tires wore out much faster than the outside and the Liberty bottoms out more than it should.
The rear springs are to stiff.  There isn't enough up travel do to lack of space between the frame and axle because of how low the vehicle sits.  IMO it's a poor design.   If you change to a different shock that is less damped,  the rear would not feel as harsh.  Thats what you gain.  What you loose is, you gain faster body roll.  To me it was worth it.  If you wanted to find an adjustable damping shock like a Ranco 9000, I believe,  it would allow you tunability which you could taylor for specific terrain.  I think the best solution is to purchase an OME lift.  The main reason I am buying an OME lift besides the quality  and design specs ( for real world driving), is a little more lift will allow the suspension to be more balanced because of taller softer rear springs and more sag and stiffer front springs.  A 2" lift will make it ride higher and  change the handleing characteristics.  It will have a better ride though and since the suspension is of a better design IMO, I think overall the benefits will outweigh the negatives.
