Gonna drop oil on crd next week ,my question is do i use mobil 1, 0-w40 or 5-w40 live in Uk so we dont get terrible winters normally just down to minus 4-6 ,and were in spring now. And also how many litres will i require as they sell it in 4 litre tubs so i'll probably need 2 with some left over,am i right in thinking it will take just over 6 litres?.thanks

6 Liters and here's the blurb from the FSM. A lot of us in the US use Shell Rotella synthetic 5-40. Here's what it says for your export model :lol:

ENGINE OIL - DIESEL ENGINES - EXPORT
Use only Diesel Engine Oil meeting standard MIL-2104C or API Classification CD or higher or CCML D4, D5.
SAE VISCOSITY GRADE
CAUTION: Low viscosity oils must have the proper API quality or the CCMC G5 designation.
To assure of properly formulated engine oils, it is recommended that SAE Grade 10W-40 engine oils that meet
Chrysler material standard MS-6395, be used in accordance to ACEA B3, B4 specification. European Grade 10W-40
oils are also acceptable.
Oils of the SAE 5W-40 grade number are preferred when minimum temperatures consistently fall below -15° C (5°

How is it that the export 2.8L CRD can use (is recommended) 10W-40 and here it is 0W-40 or 5W-40?

Good question DocB. I think it only relates to temperatures. Somewhere else than the US (as a whole) others don't dip into the freezing -20C. In Denmark for instance we set a new record low temperature with a temperature of just -9,6C. We can use that 10w-40 no problem, as long as it is spec'ed within ACEA B3/B4.

I use Esso Ultron 5w-40 which meets ACEA B3/B4. It's identical to Mobil 1 Synt-S (exactly the same oil, just a different tub).

JIMMY it will be fine with a 5w-40 oil, just keep that ACEA B3/B4 in mind when you buy! 5w-40 doesn't mean it has to deal with ACEA B3/B4!! 6 liters is what it takes (with filter), so buy 3 tubs and you got for 2 changes

I think part of it is for better CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) numbers :lol:

the thinner on start up oils help in emissions testing with the EPA is my understanding....

I was running Amsoil 5/40 because I could not find 0/40 ANYWHERE. I would lose a quart every 3k or so. Finally found 0/40(now it is EVERYWHERE) and my consumption is MAYBE a quart between every 10k change. Dealer told the 5/40 would lose oil...weird huh?

where is the oil being filled to? What I mean is the oil being added until it reaches the full mark on the dipstick? If so it is VERY likely that the beast is getting overfilled and the "oil loss" is because it is overfilled. The trick is to add 6.4 quarts of oil when the oil is changed and mark where that shows on the dipstick...that is your new full line. more than that and you are gunking the works up/
