So do all the CRD's have a 24 gallon tank  When I run it to empty on the gauge and the evic says 0 miles to empty it takes at the most 19.5 gallons to fill it. On my build sheet it says I have a 24 gallon tank (19 gallons + 4 gallons diesel added) does everyone have this issue an extra 4 gallons not registering on the gauge (I dont make it a habbit to run diesels to empty but i wanted to see what went in on empty)

i believe that ALL CRD's have a 20.5 gallon FUEL (not gas) tank.... I am not sure where you come up with the 24 gal tank... i believe the 4 gal diesel refers to the 4 gal of B5 that it came with from the factory. |

Hehe, us lucky pre-05 euro guys got a 18.5 US gallon fuel tank. We get the same stuff, light comes on when there's 10.2 liters left in the tank, EVIC displays ZERO miles to empty when there's actually more like 50 left 
When I get my light come on, I know how much fuel I got left, and I reset the trip counter on the EVIC to keep track of how far I drove on the remaining fuel. A good conservative guess can give you an idea of which fuel station you can reach on the tank

creepy... i've put 20.05 gallons into the tank before.... guess i shouldn't run it that low. |

There was a rash of Grand Cherokees a few years ago that would run out of gas with about 1/8 reading on the gauge. I think what were seeing is a corporate paronoia reaction to that. I had a Ram with a Cummins and a 35 gallon fuel tank. It would read empty with 5 gallons still in there... |

I am looking at the build sheet right now and it says 20.5 gallon fuel tank, and then it says 3.5 additional gallons of diesel. I may have to run it empty or drain it all out and see how much it takes. I would love to know I have 3.5 extra gallons after empty. It just is not frased that it is b5 from the factory so I wonder? |

I think the 3.5 of diesel is what they add at the factory and list on the build sheet. You have a 20.5 gallon tank. |

Purpose of the B5 is no algae - good ole #2 is aphrodisiac to a certain species of bacteria, very prolific in humid conditions - a vehicle equipped with B5 can sit on the lot(s) for months with no ensuing weather-related fuel problems - otherwise, once the bacteria forms, the tank must be dropped, drained, thoroughly flushed, as must the entire fuel system, to prevent reocurrance |

I once put 60 miles on my CRD once after the idiot light came on. Man was I praying for an open diesel-friendly station by that point. When I finally found a place to fill-up, I pumped 20.8 gallons in. That was as empty as I EVER want to be! If you are in America and have a CRD, you have a 20.5 gallon tank. When it's COMPLETELY empty, you can squeeze a tiny bit more in (filler hose). As has been stated before, the "extra diesel" is what DC put in it before shipping. Pre-05 diesels have 18.5 gallon tanks, but they weren't sold here. |

I had a 96 cherokee that would a little over E and would run out of gas. As it turns out, when the light came on you had about 3 miles to get gas. |

Just a thought - if we're using the same basic fuel tank setup as the gasser version, has anyone looked at whether or not we'd be able to do something similar to the "ventectomy" that the VW crowd does? On older TDI's, VW used the same fuel tank and vent setup that they had on their gassers - ie, designed to leave a couple gallons void space for vapor and expansion at the top of the tank. TDI crowd figured out how to override/modify the vent setup so they could easily put in another 2 or 3 gallons on fillup. |

would probably be better just to buy a larger tank or make a large tank. |

DIY "extra" fuel tank - trailer hitch storage rack, four 5 gallon fuel containers, large funnel, and a conveniently placed interstate rest area. Some assembly required. 
For that matter, one of the WVO/SVO kit companies (Frybrid I think), designed a extra fuel tank that fits in the cargo area inder a false floor. Then again, might be fine for VO, but don't know how wise it would be to put regular diesel in it inside the passenger compartment. I did send an e-mail to the LongRanger people about a year ago, but never got a reply back. Might be the cost of shipping to the U.S. is prohibitively expensive. |

If you were not planning to go off road on your trip you could fabricate a couple low profile saddle tanks that would mount where this guy put his rock rails; http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/vie ... hp?t=20461 . You would need to have a transfer pump for each tank that would pump into the return line so any bubbles would work their way out. If you tried to hook directly into the main fuel line, you would be asking for air in the fuel problems. Also baffles would need to be in the tanks to prevent the forward slosh when you hit the brake. With two tanks 3" thick and 16" wide and 72" long you would have an extra 29.9 gallons. Two 4" thick tanks would hold an extra 40 gallons. I don't know about you but I could not hold it that long and would need to stop to streatch my legs, sit down eat and of course, pee. BTW 29.9 gal would add 209 pounds and 40 gal would add 280 pounds plus the weight of the tanks, pumps and plumbing. If I had such a contraption, I would want a quick release so I could go off road and not worry about hanging up on any rocks or other stuff. Steve

It calls out 20.5 on the build sheet, but I've gotten 22.5 in before. Just kept waiting for the foam to go down and it kept going in. |

I would suspect the positive displacement pump calibration, in that case.................. Also, see my lift pump installation for a good view of the fuel tank: no hidden spaces for reclamation in this edition |

We did this on a MB and it was $700 but that was 15 years ago. Company who did it is out of business but they did a nice job.
