Pretty easy and fairly safe to do with the plastic fuel tanks now.
It would be a crying shame if the normal arcing of the drill's commutator was enough to ignite the fuel. It would have to be gas (patooie) of course for that to happen.

Has anyone tried installing one of the Mopar locking gas caps on a CRD? I know they have a P/N specifically for the KJ, but they don't state whether or not it's for gas or diesel use or both - ie, the gassers need a sealed gas cap for evaporative emissions controls, while we have a vented fuel tank. Don't know if a "gasser" type sealed fuel cap would present any problems along this line. As far as why I'm looking at a locking fuel cap - HOW much did your last fillup cost? |

You know that all newer vehicles have a metal mesh screen in the filler tube to prevent siphoning right? |

I've had the filler neck and hose out of the CRD. There was no screen in my 05. |

The chances of someone siphoning the fuel out of the CRD to get DIESEL is very very small. Personally, I am willing to take the chance and lose a 1/2 tank of fuel to insure that the knuckelhead ruins his gas engine. |

Just filled up the Powerstroke.....$150. Yes, it has a locking gas cap. I've had one for the CRD for a while now, just didn't put it on because it's a PIA when fueling. Guess it's time. |

Regardless of what the chance is that someone will steal fuel from me, a locking gas cap is a small price to pay for peace of mind. With all of the SUV haters out there it's not uncommon for someone to pour sugar or some liquid down the tank to ruin your ride. To the OP, I've been running a locking cap that I got from AutoZone since new with no problems. The part number was the same for the gas Liberty. I think it was $12. |

Local Autozone and Advance didn't have any in stock, but the nearest CJD dealer did have the Mopar version in stock - $16 tax and all, which rather surprised me, actually lower than many other places were offering it for, given their past pricing on Mopar parts. What was interesting is that the parts guy said they had the locking caps in stock, the regular gasser caps in stock, but no green diesel caps in stock - nearest dealer that showed one in stock was in PA! |

Is that for a vented cap, or sealed? A sealed cap will not work for long -- eventually the vacuum grows large enough to keep fuel from flowing.

The aholes in my area have a new way of stealing. Drill a hole in the tank and catch the fuel in a can. A locking cap will do nothing against this. |

Skids will at least slow them down - I had a truck for sale at the end of my drive for 3 days, went to move it - smelled nasty fuel - someone drilled the rear tank - Here is the good news - 1: the tank was mostly empty - maybe 1-2 gallons 2: the gas was over 6 years old (the fuel pump went bad ) I hope they got a nice soaking of that nasty stuff!
