Does the engine cover serve any useful purpose and how is it removed?

No useful purpose really.

Unscrew your oil cap, pull up lightly on the cover, it pops right up and off. Screw oil cap back.

I've modded my engine cover to be able to pull it off without having to take off anything else beforehand.

It only takes a little time and preferably a compass saw

Mine hangs on the wall in my garage to remind me that I own a CRD...

Mine hides the aftermarket plumbing from the head to the CCV filter over on one side and the bleeder valve on the fuel head on the other ... making it "stealty". Also, I'm guessing it has a marginal effect in helping things warm up just a smidge faster and keeps it slightly quieter... but nothing significant from a mechanical perspective.

All the cover does besides looking cool to Engine Cover Lovers is to quiet down some of the engine noise.
It is more use full than a front end BRA.

It might keep a tiny bit of heat in the engine when you want it and also when you don't want it.
