OK tell me this one, at lights or when stopped, how many shift into N as they roll to a stop. I notice that the KJ has enormous pull in 1st gear at lights or such and in my BMW I usually slip into neutral at walking pace to save wear on the torque convertor and driveline.

Anyone elsoe do similar or is it as some say unwise to follow this practice

I do as you do. Slip into N at stop lights.

It seems to me that you are going to be causing the same amount of ware and tear no matter which way you do it? I could see doing that if you have long periods of sitting in traffic.

Name Yer Poison

Brakes or shifter, which will give out first?

The brakes are made to stop the vehicle tens of thousands of times, but I'm not so sure the shifter is designed to handle that kind of back-and-forth between "D" and "N". Sure, maybe, but I'm skeptical of that.

I understand the sentiment and the desire to go easy on the brakes and tranny, since I tend to be rather anal retentive about things like that myself.

In this case, however, I just leave it in "D" 99% of the time. If I'm sure I'm going to be sitting for a while, I may nudge it into neutral, though I don't fret over it.

BUT: Do as thou wilt shall be the whole of the law. :D

Thanks guys,
Bonehead the reason why is this,,
My average run to work is about 18 miles 14 of these at around 70mph the last four are in city traffic on the m/way at less than walking pace where I can sit for three or four minutes stationary at a time and move only a few feet I notice the pull while in D is very much stronger than any other Auto I have driven so at around 2mph I slid into N as I do in my BMW and it seems much more gentle.
I wiuld however leave well alone if it was damaging or caused other trouble and stick it in D and forget it :)
