Post subject:  When does your gas light coem on?

I left Athens,GA last nite at 12:30 after seening a concert. I had just under 1/4 tank and figured on fueling up in town. I drove past 9 closed gas stations and got on the highway. The gas light came on 20 miles later when the guage suddenly hit E. I found 2 more closed stations and one that sold kerosene. The needle was completely below E when I found an all nighter with some big rig pumps out back. 70 bucks and 18.1 gallons later I got back on the road and started to breathe easier. I guess that I had 2 gallons left. When does your light come on? Why is it so bright? Why was the road so dark and lonely...

Ya, I found out too that just under 1/4 tank, that gauge falls fast!
Light came on and drove another 20+ miles, took 17.8 gallons to fill (about 450 miles on the trip meter).
I got to quit doing that.....

Mine did exactly that. Latley I`ve filled up closer to half a tank so as not to give me
sticker shock

Gauge does that when it moves further back than half full.

Light comes on when there's 2.7 gallons left in the tank. FYI.

Ok, what are you all doing to get such long runs for your fuel? Mine came on and took 17.8 gallons of fuel last night, with only 380 miles on the trip... Boo.

I'm not so sure about the light coming on with 2.7 gallon remaining. The other day my wife called and said the light came on and the EVIC dropped to 0....I said, no problem plenty left. She got home 11 miles later and I ran it to the station and put in 19.9 gallons. My gage reads about 2 gallons high, or so it seems. At 1/2 tank it consistently take 12 gallons.

Tell me again how big is our tank.

That's about right. The tank is 20 gallons, but it's 10 gallons down when the gauge reads 5/8. At 1/4, there's less than 4 gallons. I've driven 20 miles after the fuel light comes on and put 18.5 gallons into the tank to fill it. Goofy gauge.

my 03 sport has a 18.5 gallon tank. EVERY time the light comes on with exactly 3 gallons left. I can pull off to fuel up right when the light comes on and consistenly add 15.5 gallons of gas...that or I KNOW I can drive another 60 miles once said light comes on being that I get 20+ mpg everytime since I bought the KJ. I have never dropped below 19 mpg and in some cases have seen 21-22 mpg.

Its funny because when I added my larger tires and roof rack and heavy sidesteps, I lost about 1-2 mpg....I then added a CAI and a straight flow Magnaflow muffler and immediately gained back 2-3 mpg....right back to where it was running 100% stock. I hope when my kids grow a little more and I remove the 50 sum pounds of step rails, that I get back another tenth to half mpg back again...not likely though...not enough weight make a huge change on its own...not like adding full skids and a arb bumper.LOL

Well that's what it says in my euro manual. My tank is not as big as yours, just 18.5 gallon total.

My fuel light came on and I stopped at exit 88 on I-90 in WY after driving 10 miles. Their pumps wasn't working and was told by gomer that the next diesel was 35 miles in either direction. Andy wasn't there to give me assistance and no pie left over from aunt Bee so I decided to try to make it the 35 + - miles to the next fuel stop. I figurer slim chance since I'm towing 6x12 v-nose enclosed trailer. I get back on I-90 and find the next fuel stop is at exit 124 then I started to panic. I punched the next fuel stop on the GPS and after making about halfway there I started feeling optimistic. I saw 15 miles to go then 10 then 5. When it got to 2 miles to go I thought darn, this engine is going to make me proud. With one mile to go it quit and all dreams of making it to the fuel stop was dashed as it coasted to a stop.

I called AAA and requested diesel and had to explained that the Liberty does indeed take diesel. About five minutes later the towing service called me to make sure that the Jeep Liberty take diesel for they never saw a diesel Jeep and wanted to bring me gas. About another 20 minutes I see a roll back pull up with a 62 Caddy Coupe Deville on it. While I'm glaring at the Caddy the driver jumps out of the roll back with 3 gallons of diesel and said, um hmm r u sure dis take diesel. I said yeah it even got the green fuel cap too. He poured in the fuel and I cycle the key three times with the automatic bleeder open. It started and stalled the first try and ran smooth the second try.

I looked at the fuel gauge a noticed that it was one notch above the red E mark and the fuel light was out. That means that I drove 45 miles with less than 3 gallons of fuel towing a trailer and still should be proud of the engine. When I made it to the service stop one mile away it took 17.5 gallons of fuel to fill it up.

EVIC says anywhere from 20 to 25 miles left when the fuel lite comes on. I have been way too chicken to run EVIC to say "0". Lowest miles left was 5 one time. That time it took 21.5 gallons, $80 to fill at $3.70/Gallon. DC says fuel tank is 20.5 gallons. Arizona likes to "cheat" on amount fuel pumped. I have seen this before.

The tank is *definatly* 20.5 gallons. And you have way past the point of zero to run, I've put an additional 20 miles past what the EVIC says easily. If that happens again you should raise hell with the station, your getting severely ripped off.

Well, the title of the thread did say gas light...

And we are always getting ripped off in AZ for fuel. There was a law awhile back to make the pumps take into account the temperature of the fuel when pumped and adjust the cost accordingly, but the industry fought that and it went down in flames (haha).
