Performance Holy Grail-Clean the MAP

As a CRD owner for a month, newby, eager, noob, enthusiastic, clueless, huh, come to mind.
My best, performance wise, cheapest mod so far is to clean the MAP.
Like a reformed smoker, drunk, sex addict, I am convinced that this is the way to go. Trust me.
The thing was pure crud, a festering black glob, like crispy black ash.
The toughest part was removing the wiring harness from the threaded posts and those darn washers.
The engine cover pops off after removing the oil cap.

Yep. Welcome to the "clean" side

As an aside, you can put some nylon metric nuts on the threaded studs and they come off much easier than those darned friction clips.

NO KIDDING! I just did mine at 38K and it was a clump of %*(^$#. I also did the ORM, so it should stay cleaner now. I'm hoping to get 30mpg now. Last tank was 28.9.

So, I haven't been here in awhile and I thought I'd check in and see if there were any comments about fuel mileage. I always write mine down but hadn't actually figured it until this evening. We'll just say, I thought it was a little better than it was. I've been averaging about 21. I thought it was closer to 25. At 4.25 a gallon, those 4 mpg make a difference when you have a 50 mile commute every day (total, not each way).

The hub decided he needed to take a ride on his new motorcycle and, I found this thread and decided, hey, I've worked on cars before, I can do this. Uh, not so much. The hood is up and I'm standing on the bumper with my hiney in the air and he comes home. Insert the above comment here. The hub hasn't actually *seen* me do any auto repair in the 10 years we've been married. I grew up with a mechanic for a brother and was regularly pressed into service and quizzed on parts and what they did.

I show hubby the pictures and we proceed to find everything. Mind you, it's 8pm and dark so I'm trying to shine the flashlight in the correct place. I did fetch my sewing magnet just in case something was dropped. Good thing I'm multi-talented! One of the clips from the wiring harness fell down right in the middle under the car.

I'm just over 30K so I figured it can't hurt and it was icky. We'll see how much it of an effect it has.

We took pictures but I'm a computer dork and can't figure out how to post them. They were pretty much like everyone elses with the dry look and much cleaner after using a bit of brake cleaning spray and a dry with the air compressor.

Find a 'site that lets you store digipics online as a personal album - build you an album, upload the pics there - then copy the [image] pic link, paste it in your post.......... and, ummm.......I do hope the pics include the one of you on the bumper, nethermost regions aimed skyward............

First time I pulled mine it was completely clogged (this was at about 26k). I just do it every time I change the oil now. It has definitely helped.

You inspired me to pull mine out and take a look. It was the typical dry ashy mess. I'll have to add cleaning the MAP to the list of items as part of my oil change cycle.

Yep - and cleaning prolly restores the transducer zero and full-scale span calibration to near-oem specs..............
