| Post subject: | Oil Change Help Please - Hex head socket size? |
Anyone with a factory service manual or anyone who has already changed their CRD oil - what size hex head socket do I need to remove the oil plug? Also, what is the factory torque recommendation for re-installation of the oil plug? I almost ruined my plug late last night. My tired eyes thought it was a torx head and I chewed up a little of the inside of the oil plug hex pattern before I realized I was too tired to be doing this at 11:00pm at night. I finally found some Shell Rotella 5W-40 Synthetic at Walmart that meets the "CI-4 Plus" specification and I'm anxious to make the changeout. Thanks. |

I think it's the 8mm hex bit, but I wouldn't swear to it. A word of advice...if this is the first time you are draining the oil, be prepared for a fight with the drain plug. I ended up having to use a giant 1/2" drive ratchet to break it free. I thought for sure I was going to shatter the hex bit, but it actually came free. Good luck. |

Did you try a search on here for CRD oil change? Some of us have done it already. I just went to Sears and bought the metric hex socket set, and it had the one I needed in there as well as the one you'll need for the differetials, transfer case, etc. later on down the road. |

I found much about oil changes with the search but could not locate a specific hex head size or torque requirement - but your comment about other things needing hex head sockets was informative. I was just planning on getting the single hex head socket for the oil plug, but it sounds like I would be better suited to get the entire set. |

Yeah the front diff., transfer case, and oil pan all take the hex head sockets that I know of. I haven't had to change anything else yet so I'm not sure what else on this Jeep takes hex sockets. But yeah, a good set of metric hex sockets will fix you right up. Not sure on the torque requirement for the drain plug. I want to say that I read 35 ft/lbs somewhere but I'm not 100% positive. I just torque mine until it feels good and snug and it never goes anywhere. Good luck! And I have heard that the diesel engine oil has contaminates in it that are possibly linked with cancer. So many mechanics wear gloves to change the oil. It stained the concrete in the street where it leaked and it WILL NOT come clean. I'm glad I wasn't in my driveway when I did the oil change!! |

Excellent - thanks for the definitive answer. I've ordered a spare oil plug from the dealer ($8.85 for those interested) and will keep it handy just in case I mashed mine up too bad with the late night torx head incident. |

I love watching a newbie to diesels do their first oil change, it's always a big BLACK MESS all over them. 
All petroluim products are cancer causing, gas, diesel, motor oil, and much more. Lucky someone had a blacktop drive and not a cement drive.
