CRD aftermarket exhaust options

Trying to figure out what exhaust to get for the CRD. Can't cherry bomb it or straight pipe it since I live in VA. So I'm looking for the best option and both breathability and off-road clearance are important to me.

Aeroturbine? Flowmaster 50? Any other options? Which of these two has the best off-road clearance? Help me spend he little amount of my money that the government was gracious enough to give back this fine April. :lol:

I am running a "Declawed" cat and the Flow Master 70 series muffler. There is no difference in sound level inside the Jeep, noticeable difference in power. About 2 more miles per gallon increase.
The Flow Master doesn't have any packing to blow out, nothing to burn out, and is quiet..

Tim,

Did you have to remove the cat in order have it "fixed?"
Or did you leave it in place and just shove a piece of pipe up in it?
If you left it in place, how did you make sure you got all its innards out?

What are the laws in VA? If I had to put a muffler on mine, I would still 3" it from the catback and add a Dynomax "Tube" muffler. They are very free flowing and would not cause any clearance issues. I think they are now Thrush now.

I am curious about this because I am facing a move to VA and the Govt's check is paying for a new turbo back for my TDI. My plan was no cat or muffler because the info I've found indicates that no visual check is performed. Do they check for muffler and cat during the separate yearly safety inspection? If so, is it both muffler and cat or just muffler?

In response to your question, an oval muffler would have more clearance than a round one. My exhaust guy installs magnaflow on diesels instead of flowmasters because of the sound-deadening media type.

I went 3" Cat back with the 18" stainless Magnaflow. Magnaflow also has a cat back 2 1/2" system that is worth checking out.
Meineke did a custom bend for me and trimmed out the 2 1/4" section of pipe. They welded in a flange so it was easy to de-claw the Cat.
If you do some searching there is a guy who did a custom manifold back system with a 3" hollow cat $$$$.
I noticed no increase in mileage, thought a longer muff would be better but did notice some improvement in throttle response.
I went with 3" for future towing and mods. This little liberty is suddenly getting much better mileage and powerful so these mods can really add up.

Why can't you use a glass pack?? Its really not very loud at all, just a slightly deeper rumble and I can hear the turbo spooling.

Certainly nothing that anyone would object to. I'd say on a scale of (quiet)1 to 10 (Loud) where stock muffler is a 5, the glasspack gives me no more than a 6 in volume.

I agree.

Is there a law in VA that says a glasspack is not a muffler?

While we are on the subject, does anyone know what type of turbo outlet/downpipe flange we have?

If you were going to spend the money to do an exhaust, I would go all out and get a new downpipe with 3inch piping all the way back.

* The State of Virginia requires all vehicles to have mufflers. Straight exhausts, gutted mufflers, muffler cutouts or mufflers without interior baffles are illegal.
* Exhaust systems must be comparable to the designs installed as standard factory equipment. An exhaust system is illegal if it permits the escape of noise in excess of that permitted by the standard factory exhaust system that came on that particular make of vehicle. In addition, the exhaust system shall be in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise. Headers are illegal if they increase the noise level of the vehicle above the factory level.
* Chambered pipes are illegal.

I think in this case it's better to ask for forgiveness, than permission. LOL :wink:

I'm runnin a dynomax superturbo with cat, and I cleaned up the 2 1/4 restrictions in the pipe. No Noise, and the little tractor doesn't sound like it's breathing through a straw anymore, I'm getting 2 more mpg, and my wife doesn't even know that I did anything.

I tried a glasspack, got a nasty resonance, ended up with a Flowmaster 50. Nice rumble inside, sounds good outside, no filler material to burn out (all steel construction with baffles, all welded). Pricey at $125 bucks or so, but it should last.

I made a set of flanges for 2 ½ pipe. Right after the flex coupler and just before the cat, I cut the pipe and installed a set of flanges. I then cut the exhaust pipe just after the muffler. I then put my next set of flanges on. Then I took the whole original cat/muffler assembly out and carefully placed it out back behind the barn for future use if need be.
I then assembled a “New” assembly. The new setup is an old cat that was hollowed out from an exhaust shop down the street, and then I welded my Flow Master series 70 muffler to that. With my set of flanges on both ends, my new assemble just bolts in place of the old stock assembly. 5 minutes and I can change back. No resonance inside, nice and quiet just like before.

By the way, don’t run a glass pack. Inside Cherry Bomb’s (or any other favorite brand) the inside passage has louvered rows and it sets up a “Standing Wave.” Many turbo cars have tried this and I know you can see straight through it, but the air coming out of a turbo is swirling and it will choke inside a glass pack. (I have done it personally side-by-side with a straight pipe, won a $100 bet with a “Now Believer” and for what ever reason, don’t do it).

As far as running a new down pipe, you will have a problem as the flex tube for a larger size is quite pricey, according to my sources here.
It is a 2 ½ system and being open, it flows just fine for a 4 cyl engine. 2 more MPG and lots of zip.

I'll definitely put that Magnaflow on my shopping list Greg. Thanks for the report. It looks GREAT!

I'm still waiting on responses to the feelers I put out regarding VA diesel exhaust inspections and what the "loopholes" might be. After reading a bit about it, there might be more options than I though previously. After I talk with my friends who do inspections, I'll know more and post my findings.

I'm happy with my Magnaflow 15870 system. No drone at all, not really any louder, just a slightly deeper of a note. My wife described it as the CRD sounds like it went through puberty. Of course it flows better than the factory system too.
