 Post subject: thinking about buying a crd help

i found a 2005 crd 24000 miles for 15900 dollars im thanking about buying it i have a 2006 3.7 gass liberty to trade in runs great bought it new and have chacged oil every 3000 miles is there somthing to look for in this crd to help me deside weather it is a good suv

Yeah, I'd look at the maintenance records to see if the EGR has been replaced (probably) and if so, how many times, and whether both the exhaust side EGR and intake side EGR (aka the flow control valve) have been replaced. They tend to throw the same codes, and DC always wanted to replace the $300 EGR, multiple times even, instead of the $600 FCV.

Also check to see if both the ball joint recall and the F37 torque converter recall have been done. The former is a safety issue, the latter is subject to some debate here, but is supposed to make the TC longer lasting. It also improved drivability IMHO, as before the turbo lag was especially horrible, and severe and made for major amounts of wheelspin by surprise about 50 feet after a launch from stop.

Other than that, it's a nice little vehicle.

If it were me(and it isn't), I'd wait till some other CRD type trucks/SUV's come to the market in the next two years. I believe there are too many issues with the liberty crd. If you are a wrench head OK. Mine has been pretty much trouble free except for the leaking fuel filter head. But, knowing what I know now, I'd wait. :evil:

If you can find a CRD that has not had the F37 done to it.

Its a good vehicle, but it does have its flaws...the EGR system for me being the main problem. You can read on the site and see the different "issues", and what the folks here have chosen to do about them.
There used to be an economic atvantage to owning the diesel, but due to rediculous fuel price differences nowdays, I don't think theres a real economic reason to do it now. If you need a vehicle good for some reasonable towing duties that doesn't take a city block to turn around, then the CRD works out pretty good. Other than that, its just a matter of "wanting a diesel".

The f37 was a "recall" that replaced the torque converter and detuned the engine to put out less torque.

Most of us prefer our CRDs not neutered, the f37 essentially does that.

Many of us here like the CRD. And like any vehicle it has its shortcomings, the difference between CRD owners and most others is that we are willing to stick it out and get dirty improving the vehicle even further.

There is alot you can learn here, most of it will just come from reading and watching what we talk about. Also take a look in the CRD TECH forum - there will be more concise technical discussion and information there.

also i wanted to say i pull a 13 foot scamp travle trailer 1200 pounds if any one has been to branson the hills are big and long my 3.7 gas liberty will pull it but at 65 mph the rpm goes up to almost 5000 i think the crd with the 295 foot pounds at 1800 rpm will be a great choice for lasting a longer time

I pull an 18' Pontoon Boat with mine, and other than the wind drag, you hardly know its back there. You should be much more satisfied with the CRD for that purpose.
You may want to research the CRD on this site to make sure this is really what you want. Right now, economically speaking, the Dodge Hemi may be just as good(darn shame, but true). Theres not a whole lot of justification left to go with diesel now based on fuel price differences. Not only is diesel 70 cents higher, you have to (or should) use an additive with each tankful of this ultra low sulphur stuff to get the lubricity where it needs to be, which just furthur adds to the cost.
Its totally up to you, but if it were me, I'd probably be researching gas engines for the same torque rating, knowing what I know now. Diesel prices were not like this when I bought mine.
Of course, if you like to tinker, then go for it. Its a good platform to do that, as a lot of fellas here are doing.
Just my 2 cents.

To clearify the F37 "issue" :? Some, My 06, didn't get the recall. But did get the F37 flash (flash only, no TC) Back in 06 when this all surfaced there was speculation about why some did and some didn't. As I recall there were some TC's identified that had bad welds and had air leaks was one reason.

I bought one for towing an Airstream, to pull a boat out of a sticky tidal boat ramp, economy (Ha!) and for an alternative to gas.
When purchased we agreed that $3,000 may have to be spent on paying someone else to make modifications to bring this beast up to what I consider 'specifications.' We have had some fun doing the mods, some have been done by others and some are undone as yet.
Dealership warranty issues are sticky and require care.
Some will give you the impression of great skill and knowlege but be careful.
This website has made all the difference. I paid $30 to join, optional, but well worth it.
Just make sure the Liberty you are looking at is sound or under warranty by someone who has the ability to help fix it.
If you like a technical challenge, want to learn and be entertained by some cool dudes 8) , this is the place.
