Post subject:  Satellite Radio assistant: our long and drawn out drama fest

I'll make this short and sweet.

Our 2005 Libby CRD was having issues with the satellite radio and white noise or static. It would only play white noise or static upon starting the car, there is no talking or music thru the white noise or static, just white noise or static. It does this until you shut the truck off, remove the key, open the door, count to 15 and then restart. Typically, it will go back to normal playing.

Another member on the forum was searching for the article on this forum regarding a flash for the radio to resolve the issue. It is my understanding that the RBK-code radio is the issue, NOT the sirius module itself.

I relayed what information I had on the TSB about static on sirius radios to Jeep, and the tech ordered a new module. This "cost us" around $900 all said and done (carmax ate the bill). OK... well... new module comes in, gets installed, but they were too busy to activate it.

The next week, solid, was rain and we were unable to get it to active. Sirius said it was weird that we had chans 184, 202, 218 and 222 available. Only 184 should be available and nothing is broadcasted over the 190-something range. There are no 200-level channels on their service. One tech said his PT Cruiser did this and it was a bad module, stuck in some programming mode.

Search as I might I can't get down to the TSB that basically says "Flash the radio with new firmware" which is what I've had other non-CRD owners of Libby's and a member on here tell me.

So, they ordered a NEW module... this one was the wrong type, and caused the electrical system to freak out and almost fry itself. They replaced the old (not original, but the first replacement) in the Jeep and sent us home, saying they called Chrysler, cussed out some folks, and new parts are on the way.

Now this has been going on since the second week we owned the little guy. I'm getting irate about this. It would have, frankly, been cheaper and easier to take it to Best Buy and drop $300 for a Sirius-enabled head unit and had that installed. We would have even had channel information, and not just a number, with a replacement radio. I consider the RBK to be a little on the cheap side compared to almost any other non-Chrysler OEM Sirius radio out there.

Can anyone shed light on this? I'd love to take a write up to the guy at Jeep (who isn't being paid for this since it is now a warranty claim and he's physically pulled hair out of his head over this problem). I'd like to get the subpar radio working, and enjoy the year of free music we (carmax) paid for in the $700 price tag of the new module. That was defective. And the replacement caused a CEL, WIF and a host of other lights to blink, illuminate, and basically turned the dash into a disco christmas tree.

So the Jeep is at home. Parked. It is OK with that new module out of it and the old "new" module installed... and still no satellite service.

Help, please.

Figured I'd give the update for anyone else who comes along with the same question.....

They replaced the module, antenna and I believe the connecting harness. The new module (ordered by VIN of the vehicle) works fine, and so far no white noise on startup!!!

So.. if it happens to you... I guess the only option is to replace above parts. Cost is going to be around $900..... you might (seriously) be better off buying an aftermarket radio.

This is why it is so important to find a Chrysler dealership that actually knows what they are doing - which is rare because after 2 Chrysler cars, it has been my experience that most of them don't. A good indication of their current (and past) state of affairs.

The replacement (and inexcusable rip-off) of any of those parts is not necessary. One of several moronic former dealerships I used (Nalley in metro-Atlanta) first replaced my SAT tuner. Wrong. Then the antenna. Wrong. Then tried to tell me that since I didn't buy my Mopar Nav Radio from them, THAT must be the problem. So the problem would just disappear if I bought a 1200 replacement from them. Wrong, STUPID and kiss my stupid.

At least it was all under warranty.

As usual, I had to hit the net and find the TSB myself - which is the case with most Chrysler dealers I visit for most problems, diesel related or not. Can you tell this is going to be the last Chrysler car I buy? :D

All they need to do for this fix is replace an antenna connector on the SAT Tuner in the rear tailgate. That's it. The TSB has a lot of diagrams and lables that make it hard to copy / paste. PM me for the pdf and I can send it to you.

Here is the TSB and fix (about $4 dollars or less, in parts):
