So, I'm at about 30k miles on the tractor now and thinking about a full transmission flush/filter replacement/fill as well as a fluid change for the Transfer Case. Having never had an automatic before, I'm new to the AT change thing. Can someone break down the steps (high-level) that take place? i.e.: Where are the filter(s)? where is fluid drained? Where is it refilled, is the service interval for the TC the same as the tranny, etc...

I'm comfortable doing pretty much any work that's safe for one person to do, just a matter of knowing where to start, since there's no obvious filter on the bottom or a big drain plug or anything.

Dan

I do now... That helps a lot. Are folks waiting till the recommended 60k service to perform those changes?

Also, does the CRD have the NV242? That's the only one that lists full-time 4wd. The drain hole appears to be somewhat up from the bottom of the case. How does the fluid drain completely if that's the case?

yes 242 (whether NV/NP or Magna depends on who had ownership at the time)
The transfer case should be standard drain and fill with ATF

However the transmission is more of an issue, a while back Ranger1 had his procedure for changing tranny fluid and it was something like disconnect a line - pump out a quart add a quart - however tjkj - highly recommends going to a shop that has a flush machine - it changes out all of the fluid at once.
the old standard was drop the pan (which you have to do to change the 2 filters) but that won't get the fluid out of the torque converter.

I'm planning on taking mine to a shop with a flush machine- just make sure they get the ATF+4 fluid.
