On my first probe installation I put the probe in the bend of the down pipe coming off the turbo. This produces a temperature that is below the real EGT. To correct this problem: 1 ) I flipped the coolant tank out of the way 2 ) Removed the coolant tank support bracket 3 ) Removed the heat shield 4 ) Removed the probe from the down pipe Then: 5 ) I held the probe in several locations until I found a good location shown by the arrow at the following link: http://picasaweb.google.com/warp2diesel ... beLocation Note: Sorry about the lack of photos, my camera had a memory card infarction and lost all of my photos including my work photos. 6 ) I packed the pilot hole drill flutes with thick grease and after several drill slow, wipe off repack with grease cycles the pilot hole was through with the chips in the grease. 7 ) I packed the tap drill flutes with thick grease and repeated above. 8 ) I packed the tap flutes with grease and when I got it in a couple turns, wiped the tap and repacked the flutes with grease and finished up. When I pulled the tap the grease that was hanging on the tap was in fested with chips that stayed out of the manifold. I started the engine to blow out any grease from the hole that may have chips in it. 9 ) I installed the probe and reassembled. Every thing fits with no bending, rubbing, or massaging into place. 10 ) I did not have time to go for a drive but when I ran the engine in the driveway, the EGT was at 400f instead of the 200f it was before. |

when i get my EGT that is where i was going to install it too... i had also thought of using one of the holes for the heat shield too. |

Is this for a liberty CRD? If so, why does the diagram show a 6-cylinder head and manifold? |

I took a screen shot of the page out of the parts manual and drew the arrow with MicroSoft Paint. To the best of my knowledge, VM does not have an inline 6 cyl version of the 2.8L. Since the 2.8L is a 16 valve they may have two exhaust ports per cylinder to give the turbo better flow. The manifold gasket has 8 port openings and the artiest cut off the front cylinder in the illustration. Steve |

With the EGT prob relocated into the exhaust manifold ahead of the turbo as shown here: http://picasaweb.google.com/warp2diesel ... beLocation raised the EGT temp by 150f for the same driving conditions. I was expecting 200f to 300f , I was suprised. Steve |

I was expecting 200f to 300f , I was suprised. Steve Cool so for those of use mounting it after the turbo we should be adding 150f to our readings? |

All I know is what I have observed. I moved it to be more accurate. On old VW IDI Turbo Diesels, the max EGT was 1300f, the CRD is a whole new engine and I don't know the max. Maybe VM could tell us. Steve |

That has been the general concensus on other boards that pre turbo and after turbo amout to a difference of 150-200. On the cummins boards pre and aft have seen that same general reading differences. I generally install after, just because of less effort and I want a reading that I can monitor for extremes and cool down. |

Steve Steve, thanks for the PM. I'm still trying to sell the Jeep and have considered a used Skoda Octavia 1.9TDi from 2003 (like the Jeep). I want to mount my probes on that engine too, and regarding gauge placements it is much easier in that car. Regarding probe placements you might be able to lend me a hand there |

I only want to mount post turbo because if the sensor craps itself or caves in, it's not going to go through the turbo. |

When I stop at a light with the selector in Drive the EGT temp is 500f, when I shift into Neutral the EGT temp drops to 400f in a few seconds. This shows that idling in Drive uses more fuel than idling in Neutral. |

This shows that idling in Drive uses more fuel than idling in Neutral. Excellent observation. So do you think this is the best place to mount the EGT probe for the CRD? |

...ease of installation and performance, yes. Go into the deep theoretical stuff and placing it into the turbine inlet would be the most politically correct. But we are all Jeep Gear Heads and not Professors of Thermodynamics, what works is what counts. Measuring the EGT at all eight exhaust valve ports at the same time may yield different readings on each leg, but I suspect VM did that and if they found any hot spots or cold spots, they fixed them before production. Good Spot to drill and tap, just pack the drill and tap with grease to catch the chips and keep them out of the manifold and turbo. Steve |
