So I have a 06 CRD with just under 17k miles on the clock, the last time I changed the oil was at 12,500 miles May 9, 2007! I still have 1750 miles before the next oil change is due and who know when that will be because I can't afford to drive it neither can I sell it. what I need to know is whats the shelf life for moble one oil, I understand your suposed to change regular oil every 6 months if you dont meet the milage requirement, does this go for synthetic as well?

Don't be concerned with the shelf life of synthetic oil it's extremely stable.

Is the lack of miles because you haven't been driving it, or because it has been driven exclusively in the city (stop and go)?

If they are city miles, I'd shorten the interval to 6000 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first. Oil analysis of diesels driven in heavy stop and go shows more soot and fuel in the oil (can see that in some of the oil analysis posted here). You can reduce the soot by a good margin with the SEGR or ORM, but you need to replace the oil to get at the other issue. Given how cheap Rotella 5w40 and Wix filters are, it is fairly cheap insurance.

Of course, if its just been sitting and not being driven, nothing to worry about (other than fuel going bad).

Yeah, the city stop and go will degrade oil a lot faster. I would guess your only concern would be condensation contaminating the oil. If it is not run occasionally so that the engine oil is thouroghly warmed up and operated for a few minutes, water condensation could be a problem. Don't have to to do it too regularly. Heck, once a month is probably good insurance to run the CRD about 15-20 miles to make sure condensation is reduced.

Given no city stop and go all the time and you do a run occasionally to keep condensation at bay, I have seen oil stay in an engine for a couple of years and cause no problem. I guess just stay within your comfort level. A lot of construction and ag equipment doesn't get oil changes every year, yet will last a lifetime. If treated properly and brought up to operating temps and run for a little while, most engine oils will do ok on extended changes. Just getting the coolant up to operating temp is not good enough. You have to operate the engine for a little while longer to get the oil up to the +/- 200F range to get the condensation out of the oil.
