Some have opened up the airbox with the V6 unit stuffed into the mule while others have blocked off a portion of the radiator to raise engine temps - in both cases better mileage and/or performance is claimed.

1) Are these mutually exclusive mods - where one heats the engine while the other cools the intake - or do they work against each other?
2) Is there any data that proves either or both of these mods work without damaging the engine?

Let the debate begin.

- Chris

The V6 airbox mod is to keep water out of the intake. Unless water is in the intake (causing a wet filter and restriction) it will give you worse performance than the stock box (the stock box pulls more air as it is a straight shot next to the headlight instead of a small snorkel at the top). The v6 guys are modding their boxes to pull in air by the headlight just like ours do-- so they get more power and better fuel economy.

Heating the engine is something to do in winter. If it runs too cold in the winter, it wastes fuel trying to keep the temp up (by using the viscous heater). Covering the radiator will do no good unless you are in cold temps and likely idling for extended periods. Blocking the heater in warm temps will certainly result in overheating of the motor and your inner cooler, transmission, and ac will not work if they are blocked off.

I have noticed that with the engine cover off the crd has trouble keeping operating temps, at idle, on a 50-60 degree day. The winter front made a big difference in warm up times and heater operation during this last winter. As long as you keep some airflow going through it should be impossible to damage the engine.

Here is an example...I can add more 'blocks" if it gets really cold. Now they are out in the San Antonio heat. The air catch on the passenger side is still there to grab more air and feed it to the V6 airbox. Drag your cursor slowly across the grill.
