Post subject:  Extended Warranty Before 3/36 Expires?
Jeep / Cerberus keeps sending me all kinds of stuff trying to entice me into buying something to "fill the gap" between my soon to expire 3/36 and the remaining 7/70 powertrain warranty. This has NOT been a problematic CRD - not at all. I'm leaning towards saying no to this, considering it's about $1,800 for the warranty gap protection (which seems really high considering it has a 7/70 warranty anyway).

Plus, what if Cerberus doesn't make it and files for reorganization of Chrysler, LLC? That's certainly part of the decision as well.

Any opinions?

Oh - it has only 20K miles on it (my job changed two years ago and now I have a 2 mile commute - something totally unexpected when I bought it).

Post subject:  First reaction no!!....
....but read the fine print, most extended warranties just make a fast buck for the dealer. When I had a shop years ago, most of the extended warranties would cover a broken crank, but not a bad seal or gasket, but if the blown gasket caused the engine failure it would not be covered, you better have a good oil pan drain plug gasket if the engine threw a connecting rod.
Another thing is that the technician must answer all of the questions just right to get the extended warranty company to pay up.
You may also have to pay when you pick it up and wait for the check.
I may be surprised and some one may have come up with an extended warranty that is worth the paper it is written on, most of them aren't.

Chrysler's 3/36,000 and 7/70,000 are real warranties as is the 100,000 rust through warranty.

What you need to consider is stuff that is on the power train but not part of it. As I recall the EGR valve is not covered under the power train warranty and how about the injector pump? At 20k your only 5k ahead of my 06 that only has a 3/36 bumper to bumber. Another thing to consider is at least under warranty they are "unable to duplicate" many problems that many of us seem to have. Like air in the fuel causing various symptons. So it may be worthless :shock:

Joe makes a good point, I spoon feed the information so the service writer's significant other can do the diagnosis on his/her butt in front of the computer and the technician says yup that's it as soon as his eyes see it. You will need to make the warranty a quick money making brain dead deal for the dealer to do it.

I bought the 5 year 70K for $1300. Maximum care. 100 deductible. includes rental car. coveres everyting but break pads.

This has worked out great for me so far. Got a power window fixed and a new CCV.

Consider that the power windows will fail every year, from what I have heard.... it will pay for itself soon!

How much does a turbo cost?

I vote yes.

This part is interesting, the extended warranty is based on actual mileage, not extension mileage:
* End Year provided here is only an estimate. Actual end date is calculated from the vehicle's original in-service date. End Miles is calculated from 0 on the vehicle's odometer. Coverage begins on the contract purchase date and expires at the expiration date or the expiration odometer mileage, whichever comes first.

Still, I've seen much more expensive deals out there for less coverage.

ETA: Also, the coverage ends from the year the vehicle was in service, not a 5 year additional extension.

Yep, that is right Gila Monster!

One more thing.... this warranty is transferable once for $50.
