| Post subject: | Time to change that fuel filter...questions |
So I bought my CRD with 42k on it and now it has 59k. I have noticed that I am not getting the MPGs that I was a year ago. I figure its over due for a fuel filter change. I am new to this and was going to replace it with a mopar filter but I noticed that a lot of people have been talking about the CAT 2 filters. So my question is what is the advantage of the CAT fuel filter over the MOPAR. Also where can I buy it and is it a simple swap or does it require some changes under the hood for it to fit. Thanks to everyone for the info. |

I just changed my fuel filter yesterday for the first time. I looked into the Cat filter system and then decided against it. I'm sure some others on this forum will tell you why in more detail, from what I understand....you're just opening a can of worms to a lesser degree. The Mopar fuel filter was a rip off (price)! But....I wasn't going to have any headaches with the Mopar, so I bucked up for the Mopar filter anyway! I read and printed off the article/link...CRD tech: "Change fuel filter". It's kind of a pain in the booty to get the filter wrench in and around the filter. I used the belt type filter wrench, that worked the best for me. The thread has a great description on bleeding the system and priming the pump. Hope that helps! Matt |

The CAT is a better and cheaper filter but messing with the fuel filter head is opening a can or worms |

I bought Wix fuel filters instead of Mopar. I got them from: http://www.fleetfilter.com/ The CRD takes a WIX 3647. When I ordered them, they weren't listed on the webpage but they did carry them. I don't remember the price but I remember it was much nicer than what Mopar wanted, plus I threw in some air/oil/fuel filters for my other vehicles into the order. - Chris |

Napa carries our fuel filter. Same or similiar number as a WIX |

Yeah, I am getting a filter from a local auto supply store that carries NAPA and it is only $26. They had to order it, but it should be in this week. I guess the list price for the MOPAR filter is $52. I didn't know the NAPA ones were from China though! Fingers crossed it's ok. |

NAPA & WIX may be from China, the MOPAR are from Italy. |

Got the CRD at 19500 miles 9 months ago and now it has 43000 miles. Can you tell I like driving this Jeep diesel ya think? Its my daily driver. Got in to the personal interval to change the stock fuel filter at every other oil change (12000 miles) (oil regularly changed every 6250 miles, schedule B in the book)(book states to change every 25K miles) I get the Napa/Wix unit from the Napaonline web site for the part. Approx $29.00- its stamped made in China. I am in the process of lining up an in-line lift pump between the tank and fuel manager head and will get that in soon. And yes I have the heater element disconnected. No fuel delivery problems so far and mileage is 25.5 city to 30.5 hwy so I am "happy". Roland |
