Post subject:  Front Skid(Mud Sponge) Removal

Long time no post - good to see you all again...

This could probably go in one of the general forums but since we all have one I figured I'd just keep this in the family - besides the gassers wouldn't understand what in the world I was doing cleaning that...

So I was out in the garage cleaning the MAP sensor and :x there goes the screw landing some place soft - not making it to the garage floor. After 30 minutes of wiggling harnesses and feeling around in places you can't see. I figured it must have landed on the skid so I go to remove it. I bought the CRD used and have never removed it - next oil change was going to be the axles. Starting on the left rear bolt I give it a turn and it just starts spinning. So what's on the other side of this bolt? I don't see a way to get to a nut so I assume it's a broken nut insert or flag nut. Any ideas on what to do next? Sawzall?

BTW after cursing at that apparently broken nut there was the shiny MAP screw just above the starter laughing at me!

Regards, Rabid

Rabid,

I went for an oil change and the oil guy dropped the skid plate to change it.
I freaked.
Sorry, there are nut plates.
Please let us know what you end up doing.
BTW,
How are the Nokian's holding up?

This bolt you've been playing with, is it the one on the engine crossmember?

Yep it's the one on the rear engine crossmember. Once I found the MAP screw I stopped looking at the skid for now but I know it has to come off soon. Is this nutplate accessible - do I need to drill an access hole or something? What size is the nut?

BTW Rob the Nokians are holding up well. I've put 6K miles on them so far and I'm very happy. Wear looked good at first rotation. They don't seem to have impacted mileage much if at all - they are just a little louder than the factory tires and they're much better on gravel and in the snow. They just barely touch in the rear at full articulation.
