Drove my dad's jeep ('06 CRD sport) for the first time in a few days and we encountered a strange wheel lockup problem I haven't been able to find anything about in the forums. We used the jeep to pull out the stump of a shrubbery with a recovery strap. It worked fine--no apparent strain on the truck. When I backed up on my way back to the driveway I noticed an apparent loss of power after turning through a tight corner. I took the jeep for a little spin to try to replicate the problem.

Basically, everything is fine while driving straight or around shallow curves. But after bringing the steering wheel to or nearly to the extent of its range (in either direction) the front wheels lock. Then they skid instead of rolling. This continues even once I straighten out the steering wheel. Not sure if the rear wheels are also resisting in some way... When I put the Jeep in park, then back in drive, the resistance is gone until I turn the steering wheel all the way again.

Turning the Jeep off and on again didn't solve the problem. No lights or dials indicate any trouble.

Any ideas?

Sounds like the rig may still be in partial 4WD? Partial 4WD locks the axles, and when you do a tight turn, the outside wheel spins faster than the inner one, putting a lot of torque on the differential and essentially locking it up. You might try turning/going the other direction enough to loosen things up, put it into 2WD and make sure the 4WD disengages?

Thanks--that helped!

So the 4wd light was not on and the lever looked and felt like it was all the way down in 2wd, but I guess it was stuck in 4part-time, after all?

Anyway, I drove it around a parking lot cycling from 2wd to 4full-time and now everything works as it ought to.

Thanks again.

Eric.

If you shift the Xfer case while it is under a bind you can make it look like it is in a gear that it is not. Make sure that after shifting the Xfer case you listen and hear it actually disengage.

Can you actually hear that when the 2.8CRD engine purrs?

Mine does the same thing. For me when it happens and the lever is in 2wd the ONLY way to get it out of pt 4 wd is to put the lever in part time and drive for several seconds in PT before shifting to 2 WD  I don't feel it's correct but that's the way it is

No thats "correct" in that everones does it. Sometimes you get luckier and its easy, sometimes its in a helluva bind and it takes alot of effort to get it out of 4wd.

Try to make a habit of shifting the transfer case when rolliing. sometimes takes a bit to fully engage/disengage after shifting.

As bugnout says, try to shift while you're rolling. Also, I've found that if it gets bound up you can usually free it by putting it back in 4wd, straightening the wheels out, putting it in 2wd and then lightly blipping the throttle, causing it to rock gently. There is a split-second during the transition from acceleration to deceleration where there is no pressure in the drivetrain, and at that moment you can usually hear a faint "click!" and then it's fine. I've heard it's a good idea to go somewhere and snick it into 4wd and back at least once a month to keep the mechanisms from getting stuck in place.

In my case I always shift while moving and a CRD with a automatic transmission can't be "blipped" like a gasser  The service writer said "bring it back when it's worse"

Even though I don't know the exact technical description of a "blip" you just push the throttle gentle but firm and take your foot off. It then quickly disengages 4wd (when lever is in 2wd). I haven't had problems changing from 4wd Full Time to 2wd on the road rolling. Problems always arise when I try the same thing from parked. I always get drivetrain binding from that.
