Post subject:  Tires: Trying to buy American

Trying to by a good amercian with most of my purchases. I run biodiesel, etc. Try and buy clothes made in the US...ever look at your labels?

But which tires are made in the USA anymore? Cooper, I think? goodyear? Not Goodrich, from what I understand.

Pepboys is making a VERY tempting offer on Cooper Discoverer H/T. Are these any good?

Thanks in advance.

I know tha Cooper, Firestone, and Bridgstone all make tires in the US. I've been in their plants. I belive Michlean also has a tire plant in the US and there are others. However, I have no idea which models are produced here and which are produced abroad.

I run the Cooper Discovery ATR but havn't looked to see where they were made. Great tire though.

Its funny, because I consider those the 2 crappyest tires you can buy, goodyears also get thrown in that catagory.

I just looked at my Cooper ATR's (both on my Liberty and GC). They are made in the USA.....I think at the Findley, OH plant.

None of the companies listed make a good performance tire.

So, now I'm thinking of going for a Goodyear Fotera Triple TRead or HL Edition. I want install (ie not tire rack), any suggested vendors?

Nokian is from Finland. Cooper may make a tire for them, but they produce most of their products at home. They are the biggest player in the snow tire market in Europe.

I guess it doesn't matter as they are going to be made in China soon....

You'd rate Bridgestone Revo's, Alenza's, and Blizzaks as crappy tires??? Yah, their OEM stuff on Toyotas are crap, but then, so is everyone else's OEM tires.

No, I'd rate the bridgestones I've had as crappy tires, therefor all bridgestones must also be the same.

Hence:

My limited research shows Cooper and Goodyear with both ownership and manufacture in the US.

So, I'm currently thinking of Either:
1) the Goodyear Fortera Triple Tread (or HL) [$700+ install before some rebate]
2) the cheapo Cooper Discover h/t ($500 installed at Pep Boys before rebate). And what the heck does the H/T mean?

Advice welcomed.

Highway terrain I'd gather, although I'm prepared to be completely wrong

I have the Firestone Destination LE and could not be happier, but then the wife drives it most of the time.
Smooth and aggressive for winter here in the UP, much better than stock and reasonable price.

This link http://www.howtobuyamerican.com/bamw/ba ... oper.shtml said that only Goodyear and Cooper are US companies. Yes other make tires in american plants but profits leave the country. So that said I haven't seen a Goodyear tire that is worth anything in a very long time so that would leave Cooper if you want a US owned tire company.

MT/R's kicka$$,never had one problem with them and by far the best tires I have ever purchased. There passenger car tires suck though, same with Cooper tires or any other tire company.Firestone tires just plan suck but are better then BFG's by a long shot.
