Well...my little CRD has developed the "sudder of death" once again.

It had one TC replaced before I bought it. I had one replaced that didn't fix the issue. Then I went back and they put another one in, along with new clutches and pump.

About 6000 miles later, the death shudder is back. Since my warranty is up next month anyway, I asked if they would install an aftermarket TC for me under warranty if I supplied the part. The service manager agreed.

So, I'm $850 poorer, but I have the Suncoast TC and Transgo shift kit coming. The shift kit may not be necessary, but the guy at Suncoast told me that I should do it to get increased line pressure for the new TC. Since I do tow with my CRD, I figured I might as well bite the bullet and do it.

When the parts come in, I'll schedule an appointment with my dealer to get everything installed.

I'd say you've come out a good bit ahead of those of us who paid for the install out-of-pocket!

Already been F37'd. Too late for that.

That was done before I bought the vehicle.

this might be a stupid question, but isn't line pressure controlled by the ECU?

The transgo kit has a resistor that you solder in line with the pressure sensor, so it fools the ECU into raising it.

Did the price of the Suncoast go up by $100? I thought it used to be $595.

If it shifts hard from 1st to 2nd and the relearn program does not smooth it out, remove the
resistor, and it will smooth out. I have the transgo kit, new pump new TQ, but not the Suncoast
and the resistor had to go, too rough from 1st to 2nd.

Same here, removed it after a few weeks. I would not put the resistor in if I had to do it over again, and would recommend to anyone else they not put it in the CRD. Now that I think of it, I should have ohmed it out and found a resistor of maybe half the value, to reduce that effect.

I wish I got off as light as you. New T/C, Pump and they shipped the cooler today. Now I pony up for the install.
This thing is way over my total $3,000 budgeted Mod limit and it is not done yet.
Sniveling off....
"Suncoast T/C, Pump, Cooler and Shift Kit Install" is where I put it down.
Are you going to add on cooler? Would be interested in what you plan on doing.
Thanks guys for the tip on the 1-2 resistor.

The 1-2 resistor is part of the "reprogram kit" which is a superset of the shift kit. A couple extra parts and a few tens of dollars more (although they do mention NOT using that part if you have a reprogrammer, so they're charging you for resistors AND advice...). I'm contemplating doing the kit, filters, pump, and TC also, but don't know what to expect for price of the work. The local jeep dealer (that I trust the work of) quoted me $210 for new fluid, filters and whatever else is in a normal trans service. I assume that the reprogram kit doesn't really take much more work (just a few minutes of careful wrenching). How much can I expect to pay extra for the TC install along with the other work?

they'll have to remove the VB so its going to be a bit more than 210. As far as I'm aware, shift kits are different balls and springs that get swapped out in the VB.

My guess is 10-15 hours labor @$50-90 per hour to do the complete job.
I will install the cooler, have all parts, fluid, filters on hand to make the mechanic's job easier.
Tempted to do it but do not have a "clean" workbench and am inexperienced on automatic transmissions.

Are you adding a cooler? Towing?

Probably no additional cooler right now. If I need to, I can do that later myself with a simple drain and fill. I don't tow often (occasional landscape trailer with building materials or furniture) but do have stop/go traffic pretty often, and I live in the south, so 100degree road temps are not at all uncommon. I'm really only uncomfortable with doing the TC myself (due to weight parts to move, etc) and don't want to drop the pan in my small garage or driveway (due to mess). What have others paid to have the TC replaced (not including the TC price)?

Dan

Well...got my CRD back today after the Suncoast and Transgo installation. Total cost for installation, just over $300....thanks to most of it being covered under warranty.

Now...I sincerely hope I didn't waste over $1000, because I can't tell one bit of difference between the stock torque converter and the suncoast. Granted, the shudder is cured (but it was cured with the stock replacement too, but it came back), but the Jeep doesn't feel any different.

I can tell the shift kit is there. Shifts are better. A lots less "mushy", but not at all harsh. Makes me wonder if the tech read the instructions and put in the resistor. I didn't get the old parts, boxes, or instructions back, so I don't know where to look to see if the resistor was installed, but I can tell you that shifting is better, especially downshifts....if that makes any sense.

So...time will tell if the TC is a good thing. But for now, it feels exactly the same. Hope they didn't keep my Suncoast and install another factory unit.

The less mushy isn't the shift kit - that's the better hydraulic hookup of the more agressive impeller\turbine vanes - stall is much lower due to using the Hemi internals, and is what this Diesel needed - if you could lock the TCC at low rpm is another area where you would notice the difference in lack of slip under power, compared to the oem - towing will be the main area where you will notice differences in hookup and lockup - aggressive jack-rabbit starts would show the lower stall as better response off the line, way less engine rpm to get the job done - the interval after removing a trailer will reveal some of the shift-kit improvement, while TCM is still basing shift quality on the previous loading

I did notice that this morning in stop and go traffic coming to work that it took a less RPM to get moving. I swear, but 1200rpm or so, the thing was pulling without excessive slip.
