Well, Sarah and I have fully committed ourselves and our funds to doing a 2.8 VM Motori diesel engine “installation” in a 2007/2008 JK Wrangler Unlimited with an automatic transmission. The installation will be fully installed by Todd at DieselToyz in San Antonio, TX. I have asked Todd to answer questions and participate in this thread as needed.

A non-egr 2.8? Is this the crate 2.8? Good luck. Wish I had the money and time to pull the 2.8 and do some "improvements"

Agreed…………….100%
Todd will take pictures as needed, unfortunately I will not be there for any of the installation. As a matter of fact, we will fly to San Antonio and pick up the Jeep and drive it home when it’s done!

I will let Todd answer these questions.....................I can tell you this much, this will be more like a factory diesel installation rather than a diesel swap. Keep in mind, these diesels are already in use overseas in the JK.

I begin drooling when I hear people mentioning the JK and VM motori in the same sentence. I had a test drive in one and was lucky to get an offroad experience as a passenger. That engine is even better than the one we got in our little KJs. I can see from the specs on the danish site that they've now upped the 2.8 CRD to 460Nm compared to 400Nm in the KJs. This is only true for the JK with an automatic.

How did they do that? Did they upgrade the 545RFE with a suncoast TC from the factory perhaps? Just 5 months ago the automatic was detuned to 400Nm to prevent the auto box from shitting itself.

Great Move!
This is one of the reasons I bought the Liberty.
I figured the body would rot out or get wrecked and I would have a 5 speed auto and 4 cyl diesel for the Wrangler. Almost bought a new Wrangler but the gassers are not quite good enough.
Good Luck too!

Hehe. We have a specific plan for which way we'll tackle the installation. Once we get a little further involved, more info will follow. We are going to try to use an EGR motor though.

Out of curiosity, since the jk is offered in Europe with the VM 2.8 anyway, could you not simply source specific parts, electronics, etc. from Europe?

Or just buy one in Europe and export it back to the US?

The JK CRD is $42k over here in Spain...

Making the Jeep meet US emissions would most likely be the problem with importing. I don't think they make it easy for us to import non-US emissions certified vehicles. Otherwise somebody would be importing them already. So do you have much access to Bio-diesel in Spain? It is hard to come by in the midwest of the US.

Importing them is unrealistically expensive. We will be attempting to use a US spec engine/trans setup. -Todd

Agreed.

For anyone who has seriously looked into it you know just how daunting a task it is and how unrealistic it is.

Yea. I have, and I can agree with every bit of that statement.

Besides saddling our CRD with that cursed EGR, its one of the reasons I loathe the CARB and their EPA whipping boys. They continue to go after the group without any organization or lobby groups, while tragically ignoring the main sources of the pollution they are trying to deal with: power plants, factories, and heavy shipping.

When a power station (That is little more than a big fireplace with a steam engine attached) is disinterested in switching from coal (a solid fuel source that leaves residue that must be shoveled out) to another solid fuel source: Biomass or trash... That irritates me. But when the CARB and the EPA flatly IGNORE their stationary polluting chimney stacks in favor of continually harassing the public away from a more efficient fuel (diesel) it really burns me up.

And recent studies have shown that while LA's air is a *little* better than it was before... It still isn't great at all. Where is all the pollution coming from? Wait for it... The GIANT SHIPS in the port! They are leaving their engines running all the time while in port, and burning fuel that is SO nasty and not-emission-controlled that each ship probably produces more evil than tens of thousands of cars on the road!

But are they interested in going after the ships? Not a bit. The ships have a lobby fighting for them.

I've had tons of requests for an Unlimited CRD but have never had anyone come up with the $$ to devote to the project. It's gonna make one hell of a swap. -Todd

Agreed, most people talk big, but at the end of the day don't have the money, or want you to completely fund it. Personally I don't want to be left holding the bag on ANY amount of money just because the buyer changed their mind later.
