Remote start

Does anyone currently have a remote start on there CRD? What kind did you get, and how hard was it to put in? Just wondering because I saw one at the local Wal Mart for 44 bucks, and was a bit tempted but I was a bit afraid it wouldnt work with a diesel.

But I seem to remember seeing something about remote start not working on the CRD in my owner's manual. Glow plugs? I could be wrong, so check there first. Then if it's not prohibited, go to the parts counter at your dealership and see if you can get any info from the parts guy and look over their "official" kit to see if there's anything special about it. Maybe even take a photo so you can compare to the one you found at Wally World. Some of the parts guys are dumb as rocks, but sometimes you get lucky and find one that really knows the straight skinny and will help you.

Yeah, it does say you can't use a remote start because it can't be taught to wait for the glow plugs. Though i'm sur eyou could just rig a 15-second delay between ignition on and crank. Maybe someone's done it already. But I would ask to make sure it'll deal w/ the Glow Plugs

However, on that note, I'm not sure the whole waiting for the glow plugs is such a big deal. On a lark the other morning, I climed into the Jeep, and just went immediately to crank. The glow plug light came on, Jeep started cranking, light went off, Jeep started. So maybe the system still supplies power to the glow plugs even while cranking? Idk, random thoughts.

Interesting.. I thought in the old forums there was a few Jeepers that did install remote starts. Be nice to here what they say/used, cause its getting cold here in Chicago now. Theres gotta be one meant for diesels.

The factory remote start gives instruction for installing it on the Diesel Liberty. There is a step you must take when programming the system to let it know it's a diesel. It then gives a 15 sec or 30 sec deley (user chooses) to allow the glow plugs to warm up. You must also buy the install kit for you liberty due to the key sentry system. You have a special transmitter wire you have to wrap around the ignition cylinder that allows the system to crank.

One odd thing: On my CRD, if you put the key in and turn it straight to start, it delays a second before it starts cranking. I figured it had a delay built in for the glowplugs. :?:

If so, why would it be an issue with a remote starter? If not, why doesn't it start cranking when I turn the key?

The owner's manual says the glow plugs take a maximum of 2 seconds to heat up. We haven't had any cold weather until last night, so it hasn't been an issue here. Unfortunately, my wife needed my jeep this am, so I don't know if the delay was longer in the cold. It was right at freezing point last night - all our flowers on the front porch died.

I have notice that delay when you turn it start in the mornings. I have also seen the glow plug light come on a couple of time on cold mornings. I'm really not the one to ask about this since I live in Florida.

I think just to be safe on a cold morning I would let is sit just a few seconds before I started it.

I put in a home built system using a industral PLC that I program myself. I hit the unlock buttom twice with-in 2 seconds, the PLC turns on and waits 4 seconds then starts. The one thing you might watch out for is the battery voltage will drop to 9 VDC when starting. A starter system may not like this an lockup.
