Thinking about an 05 or 06 Liberty CRD - any advice?

First post on this forum. I am an old Jeep owner but looking to expand my horizons. This site was highly recommended.

I need some advice from the collective. I am looking to buy a used Liberty CRD to replace my commuter car with 191,000+ miles on the clock. Any advice what years to look for? Anything to avoid?

Edmunds.com consumer comments make the Liberty out to be a death trap. I just can’t think that is true. Jeeps are great vehicles but I know they have their quirks. Common complaints were all warranty items.

What is your best advice on what to look for or avoid? Thanks!

That link has all the issues that I know of. I can say that I'm loving every minute of the quirky little diesel, even with the occasional minior failures to to seemingly unjustified problems. The educational value is easily worth the small price of "re-engineering" certain aspects of the CRD. I've very much enjoyed making small mods that make it more reliable and better performing. The community is great and always willing to lend a hand and there are several other CRD folks in the ATL metro to help out if necessary.

BTW, Cartersville is a great location if you want to try your hand with Biodiesel. I've been using commercially-produced for 2 years now and all things considered, I prefer it over petro.

Better yet, go to a dealer service department with the VIN (Don't ever bring the truck there!) and ask them nicely for a copy of the VIP REPORT. Its a specific name, and if they get squishy about giving it to you, explain that you are buying the truck and want to see the complete service history. They shouldn't have a problem, but the last option is that they can black out the previous owner info (it's all there) with a marker on the printout.

I never had any issue getting these from my dealer, and I got probably about 10 of them before I found my CRD. Where is Covington? I'm in grad school in Savannah, and bought my CRD from the dealer in Dublin. I wouldn't suggest them, BTW.

Thanks for the encouragement. I knew that my instincts on the Liberty were correct. Also good to see someone from the Atlanta area. I used to be part of the Georgia Bounty Runners 4x4 club when my CJ7 and I tore up a lot of dirt in Tellico and Blairsville.

As for bio diesel, I’ve never had the cojones to try it in my Excursion. It sounds interesting. Thanks for your input.

Glad to have the advice about running the VIN. Ford has the same thing with their OASIS Reports and the guys on the Excursion forum swear by the practice of checking everything before making any financial outlays.

BTW, Covington Ga. is a far East suburb of Atlanta along Interstate 20. The only claim to fame here is that this is the town where “In the Heat of the Night” television series was filmed. Also the first season of the Dukes of Hazard was shot in and around this area as well.

Wow. I'm getting blind or stupid or both. I could have sworn I read Cartersville. Nevemind about the commercial Bio thing... Closest to you is in athens or East Atlanta. I have a good friend who lives in covington. Pretty area. Lots of horses
