Post subject: | Boost pressure solenoid filter location |
I finally located the boost pressure solenoid filter on the CRD and I felt that other new CRD owners would like to know where it is, since it should be checked every 6000 miles. It is on the front side of the vacuum tower. This tower is located by the passenger side fender, and is about 3 inches in front of the coolant tank. This filter is about 1 inch behind the air cleaner housing, and about 3 inches away from the passenger side fender. It is a small clear plastic filter, about 1 inch in diameter, and 1 inch long, with a brown paper filter element inside. Apparently, it filters the air used to change the turbocharger pressure, so if it became plugged, it would certainly hurt performance. New ones are about $6 from the dealer. |

Mine is still white. I think the filter is for the whole vacuum system and not boost controller alone. |

Post subject: | Went to purchase |
Well I went to purchase this simple little filter at Bill Luke. Guess what, they had no idea what it was. Thought I was crazy. Showed them the manual. They looked and looked and looked and finally found it- $5.80. But it too, like everything else ever made for this engine, is backordered. I ordered 3 of them-- they said the computer could not find any in the whole state of AZ and they ordered it from LA. Should be here in a week or so. Crazy. Imagine if I went to AutoZone. |

The filter is to let air in reducing vacuum to the turbo, via vacuume regulator, to reduce the amount of boost. If you plug the filter boost will go through the roof. The vacuum system works to remove air and the air filter lets it in which would defeat the purpose. |

That is the critter. When I bought my Jeep I noticed it in the maintenance schedule. Asked the salesman, who promptly took me over to service and parts to get an answer. Service was closed and parts was clueless if that is any surprise. ![]() |

Post subject: | little filter |
Interesting little critter isnt it, hmmmm..... what if you route the little rubber tube to a new fitting to the clean side of the main filter in the top of the air box, you could then forget about ever buying that little filter again. I bet you'd get a couple of other benefits from this as well........ just something to think about and ponder is all ..... ![]() |

When the VGT on the turbo is released from its vacuum prison, the air is sucked through that little filter and is allowed passage into the VGT vacuum supply, which relaxes the vanes and reducing boost because the vacuum is now gone. The little fellow is also used on euro CRDs but instead of a VGT it supplies vacuum to the EGR valve we use. I just plugged it all up in my own little SEGR mod (as I also did on the TDI) ![]() |

I'm not too sure that the pressure differential of the air box would be a good thing for proper operation. The two MB's are doing just great and I made a trip last weekend in the CDI and was very pleased that I was able to get 42 MPG while keeping the speed down to 60 mph, the return trip was almost 36 MPG but it was a different route with rolling hills and curves and the speed was a little higher in the 70 to 75 MPG range. We have really, or I guess maybe I should say "I", missed the go anywhere ability of the CRD, but the lack of dealer support and all the crap that went down later just for me was just "a bridge too far" and I left the Chrysler camp completely. I have been trying to convince myself that maybe a MB CDI SUV is in our future, but I keep coming back to reality and thinking that all we really need is the R320 CDI where we live. Hey I hope all is well here with everyone and I do lurk, just seldom log in to post. I still think this is the best Jeep forum going. ![]() |

When you get the new filter don't forget to use a file to grind off or a piece of tape to cover the stinkin Mercedes logo... |
