Guys need input.

Turned a corner stepped on the gas and felt a small clunk, or maybe it was just the loss of torque, and then nothing except a new whine.

Reverse won't work and neither will any forward gear. In park when i rev the engine there is a whine? Is this the torque converter?

Any input please help.

Sounds like it gave up the stator, but could be totally stopped up filter, or filter disintegrated, so no oil pickup from the sump

GMCTD,

Stator? I am not that up to date on my tranny lingo. Please give me more detail.

Did the 4X4 lever get bumped into neutral somehow?

Kinda hate to mention it, but I've seen it before after the owners had it towed to the shop  ....

Not that. I checked. 4x4 handle in 2wd.

the stator is a piece of the torque converter

Correct - the stator is a set of vanes in the tc - normally made of aluminum, we got plastic, which can disintegrate from heat and stress - no movement indicates no hydraulic coupling in the tc or\and no pickup of oil from the pan or\and TCM misunderstands range-selection input switches - need to get it to the dealer, they can tell you if it's easy\simple (low fluid level, range switches, oil filter, etc) or major (tc, oil pump, etc)

gmtcd,

So for me step 1 is dealer to ID problem correct?

Hopefully once they ID the issue if it is the T/C I will be able to swap it out with an upgrade with the help of everyone here.

Any idea on what the Stealership will charge to ID the problem?

If you're still in warranty, it's free - pray for a low odo...........

Dragging my trailer around a bit today, I was pulling it up a small hill with the TC locked (OD off, at about 40mph) when I felt something like driving over rumble strips. Tach was around 2000, so it was near the "lugging" range for what I was asking of it, but didn't seem to have any problems pulling the hill. It went away if I backed off on the go pedal a bit, or turned my Edge module to the stock position. This was somewhat repeatable, but I didn't let it do this for more than a second or so once it started. I backed off and left the switch off. Thoughts? Is this converter slippage starting? The trailer is probably around 2500 lbs right now, but I will be loading it more tomorrow for the drive back to Florida from New Hampshire.

Is it better to pull hills with the TC unlocked? To me, this seems counter-intuitive, as you are then spending fuel to warm up transmission fluid rather than make the wheels go round. Please offer your esteemed insights.

gmctd,

no such luck on still being under warranty. 80,000+ miles.

If the tc\pump is functional, the transmission will move the vehicle hydraulically, even if the TCM is disconnected and laying on the ground underneath - time to bite the bullet - whomever you take it to should be able to determine something initially by dropping the pan - any plastic chunks means the tc - any chunks means system will require flushing, along with any repairs necessary.

I am having it towed to the stealership this morning. Hopefully they will know something today. If the TC/Pump are toast would the tranny shift into gear at all? When I shift out of park I get nothing. Also, could a sensor cause this? I am hoping it's a sensor.

Well the dealership looked at the CRD this morning and said the Torque Converter is toast but the tech thought there may be more serious issues internal to the tranny. A more experienced tech is supposed to look at it Monday to see what he thinks.

Has anyone had a Torque Converter meltdown and if you did, did it bomb your tranny?

There were a couple prior to the F37 recall and folks mentioned getting TC's replaced but not transmissions
but I think they have to flush everything and swap out the tranny cooler (i.e. radiator) just to get them clean.

The hard parts on the trans are pretty solid - it's the TC that's weak - and the F37 was only intended to get past the warranty.

(The threads would be about 2+ years old so I'm not sure I can find them)

I just went looking through the old posts and i found some of the info. Looks like Ranger1 had some of my problems but if I remember correctly his would still move a little. My CRD would not move at all. I am hoping that, like Ranger1's, mine just needs a new T/C and trans cooler etc and not a whole new tranny.

I got my finger crossed for you mate!!

When I had my KJ all I could think of when towing was "TC TC TC TC TC TC TC TC!!!!"

Man I would have loved to have had a solid transmission on that KJ, I would've went flying over speedbumps just to enjoy that engine :D

thanks for the support Uffe.

Regardless it is getting a Suncoast TC and Transgo shift kit even if it needs a brand new transmission. I don't want to go through this every 80,000 miles.

My CRD sheared off the bolts connecting the flywheel after the front seal was replaced and the tech must not have torqued the bolts properly. The result was no movement in any gear.

You can also get a really good transmission from Suncoast - built to survive professional Hemi dragracing - it's identical to the one in the KJ - mof, the Suncoast TC for the KJ is the Hemi version
