Post subject:  Engine lost power & rattled...

Hi guys,
I had a very strange thing on my 2006 CRD (30 K miles)
Engine not yet warm, i left a greenlight by accelerating smoothly. When it shifted to 3rd gear it lost almost all its power. Like the engine was running on 1 or 2 cylinders.
I got to a parking area, openned the hoot and the engine was rattling like hell.
Closed the hoot, drove 1 mile: absolutely without power, average speed approx. 10 miles/hour and rattling

Stopped the engine, called the TCS (great Swiss stuff that will get you out of any poopoo). :D
Waiting for the mechanics to arrive, i started the engine again: Runned fantastic !!! No rattling , all the cylinders where back and got all the CRD power !!!
No error lights on the dashboard either !!
The mechanic connected the toughbook: no error message either !!!

Since there is no trace of the problem, my mechanic cant do anything !
Does anyone had it ? Any idea of what it is ? How to solve it?
Many thanks
Cheers from Swiss Alps !!

Possibly a clogged fuel filter :?:

Since it was fine after the next start up, I'd say the computer went into limp mode. I don't know why it did, but the computer saw something it didn't like and was protecting the engine. I've had it happen couple of times.

Classic limp mode: cycle IGN switch, ECM resets, all ok - should be an error down in archives readable only by Starscan - likely a fuel supply issue, as suggested

It is the classic "air in fuel" syndrom. I bet you didn't get any CEL, right. Was it a hot day too and had you been driving. RPM's up buy no power and like running on 2 cylinders? AIR IN FUEL! Check out the heater connection on the filter head and see if there is fuel in it. Replace the head and get a lift pump.

I had that happen to me several times, even had it go in limp mode while driving at highway speed. Installing a lift pump fixed it.

I second the "push the pump button on the filter housing" resolution

IE: I bet that there is air in your fuel line, thus resulting in limp mode.

I drove like 5 miles in limp mode once. The truck had trouble going up not very steep hills. I was terrified I broke it. Then I found it we bought the car pre-broken from Chrysler :)

Sounds exactly like what happened when I put in a full tank of B100 and clogged my fuel filter. It flushed through and it never happened again, but rattled me at the time.

Exactly the same for me. No CEL.
Has not happened to me since the In tank lift pump mod !
