I have read on this forum that, generally, the 2.4 and 3.7 cat back exhaust is the same as, and will fit the 2.8 CRD. Are all years (02-07) the same as far as cat backs go?

I plan on hollowing out the cat, and was going to custom fabricate/modify something to solve the heavy, restrictive OE exhaust problem. However, I can get a deep discount on the borla dual system, and it would take less fuss than custom fab.

I have been looking into aftermarket exhaust systems and some of them seem to fit different year ranges (ie. 02-05, 02-08, 06-08). I am particularly interested in the borla dual exit exhaust system (Pn 14999). I know it is unnecessary and won't make much of a difference, but I'm a sucker for the dual exhaust look.

Anyway, Borla's online installation manual says that the dual system will only fit 02-05 V6 models.

http://www.borla.com/media/installations/14999.pdf

Any ideas?

Maybe the increase in fuel capacity made fitment a problem for the dual system (Just a possible reason)...

Really, the 06-07 libertys have a larger fuel tank? or just the diesels?

I do know that the magnaflow 3.7 kit works on the crd. I love mine. Only 1 tip, but it looks good.

I confess I do not know for sure, but I believe the primary restriction in the CRD's exhaust system is called a turbocharger, and ridding yourself of it is, uh, a bad idea.

'06+ KJ's,CRD's included, got ESP which required 4 main brake lines so each brake can be controlled seperatly and that's the reason the Borla dual setup won't work with '06+ KJ's,the brake line placement is right in the path of the the drivers side pipe.Brake lines and exhaust pipes don't like each other very well, the bigeer fuel tank is not the problem since the skid is the same sizer for all years and the Borla duel setup cleared the OEM tank skid with plenty of room.

ESP is the DEVIL     !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

About $600,but it made out of T304 stainless steel,it'll outlast your KJ unless you smash the muffler with the full weight of the KJ on a really big rock.

Hmm, interesting. I never would have thought of the brake line issue. I guess I just figured that Jeep engineers would have tucked the brake lines tight to the frame and out of harms way. Would you know offhand how much interference there would be between the pipe and brake lines? If not, I'll have to pop my head underneath and take a peek. Maybe there is enough wiggle room for some fudging ("shifting" of components, and wrapping with insulating tape).

It still doesn't explain why the exhaust system is only supposed to fit the 3.7 and not the 2.4. Does the 2.4 have a smaller diameter exhaust system?

I just looked under the back of the Jeep, with the pictures of the borla installed in mind. The only things I could see that would possibly interfere are the emergency brake cables but the installed picture clearly shows the cables behind the piping.

I'm wondering though, whether I am going to have a problem with the PML diff cover sticking out too far and interfering.

I am pretty optimistic and think that I may give it a shot. Worst case scenario, I am on really good terms with the auto parts store I would be purchasing it from and could always have it returned. I used to work there for 3 years before college and am close friends with them.

... you will gain nothing over a 2 1/2" in and out exhaust with a low restriction muffler. The 2 1/2" pipe has ~4.9 square inches going in and two 2 " pipes have a combined total of ~ 6.29 square inches going out. If you want max you can go with the Darby Walters system and not need to worry about flow loss through the muffler or elbows.

But if you love dual pipes, I am sure a competent shop with a rose bud on the torch will make it fit around the fuel tank.

As far as 304 SS goes, the one thing that makes it rust are the chlorides found in Sodium Chloride and Calcium Chloride use to melt snow or hold down dust. Having the tips made from 316 SS will keep the shiny chrome look.

You guys are definitely right, it's not worth twice the price for the Borla. Plus I don't really feel like having to open up a can of worms with trying to make something fit that may not.

What have you guys heard of MBRP? They do a lot of diesel exhausts, and their systems fit all KJs, regardless of engine and year. They do offer a stainless system, all tubing is 2.5" mandrel bent with straight through muffler.

We towed from Atlanta to Ohio last year in a gas burner F150 with MBRp exhaust. One of the sides kep popping out of the rubber mount and rattling around. The drone at highway speed while towing was painful. I have never heard anything worse on a truck, except for the dodge boys who run straight pipes down here.

Have you heard the MBRP exhaust on a CRD? Anybody?

I ordered the MBRP stainless system thursday and picked it up and installed it friday. I took a bunch of pictures but most of them didn't come out well. I will stick my head under there again later today and snap a few better ones.

Anyway, the system went in with no hickups. I even got the old catback out in one piece. The fitment was perfect, matches up well with the cutout in the rear valence. I can barely notice a difference in sound, only the sound of exhaust flowing through when I really get on it. And no drone, thank God! All in all it was $360 very well spent.

I didn't "clean out" the cat though, yet. I'm trying to think of the best way to do it. Maybe an extened hole saw? I have used rebar/plumbing pipe before on my friends G35 but it was a pain and took longer than I would have liked. Those were out of the car too. Any ideas for better methods?

BTW the system came with a lifetime warrantee, of which I still have to fill out the card and send in.

3/4" plumbing pipe - use the rebar to unplug the pipe between sessions - allows the pipe to penetrate the clay matrix, goes way smoother than pipe or rebar alone

Back when I was looking at exhausts, the Mopar twin pipe system was really the Borla system, but considerably cheaper. Even had the Borla name stamped on it.
