Deutsch oil filters are absolute crap, some of the thinnest flimsiest metal I've ever seen. Nearly ruined the engine in my '87 Subaru one time by using a Deutsch oil filter. Within less than 100 miles, the filter started leaking like a seive at the rolled joint where the case met the base, and totally lost all oil pressure just as I was pulling into my driveway, leaked out 3 quarts of oil in less than 100 miles!!!

OldNavy, I hate to disappoint you, but my manual states expressly that "this warranty is valid for Jeep vehicles purchased in the USA only". I showed this to my dealer and he admits it is for U.S.A. owners only. The only reference in the booklet to Canada is that when (US) owners travelling in Canada may obtain warranty work at Canadian Jeep dealers.
I am sure that in a court of law this warranty booklet would be found to be of exclusive coverage for USA Jeep owners.

I used to own a 2002 KJ and I had in fact specific Canadian warranty and maintenance booklets.

I'll give it a bit more time and if the dealer does not come thru I will call the DC Hot line.

Ok I think we are saying same thing, but not quite correctly. Yes you have a warranty in Canada on the Jeep, it's is just with a different book with different info concerning the warranty and contact info for warranty problems and you got a US book with a Jeep that was shipped to Canada for sale. Some country's have different warrany due to different laws requiring different coverages.

I've thought about using other filters (I've typically had great luck with Napa Gold, which would be a 1516 for the CRD), but in looking at the Mopar filter and comparing it to any of the 'also-fits', in this case, I really believe there is a substantive reason to use the Mopar filter.

What is this "substantive reason" to use a MOPAR filter over say a Mobil 1 filter? Yes I would use a OEM filter over a Deutsch filter or Fram.

Below the quality of the OEM and Mobil. The problem is some of the brand filters like NAPA can have different qulity as they may buy a filter from Champion Labs or it could come farmed out from India. This is true for different makes of cars, even company like Mann may out source a filter for one type of MB car to Spain and then on another engine (diesels usually) they will out source them to India and those from India have been found to have dead bugs, cotten jin tailings and even gravel inside the filter. This was checked into and found out about a year ago by some of us on the main MB diesel forum in the US.

Now having said all that I think I would stick with the OEM, Mobil and if I remember right the K&N filter was also in the class of OEM, when we had the oil filter wars. Lot of people got supprised by how poor some oil filters were, then the last little war was about air filter on the MB forum and OEM won hands down over all filters. Here is a still working link to what I consider to be the definitive testing of air filters by type and brand on a GM Duramax diesel which is a fairly new generation turbo diesel as is our CRD's. ISO 5011 Duramax Test

Well, I can't say I've cut a Mopar filter open, but...

The anti-backflow valve appears to be made of much more durable material...

The threads are cast out of thicker material...

The case of the oil filter (the metal 'can') is much thicker material...

I've cut open one and still have it if you want pictures. I also cut open a STP for comparison. I have a Purolator on there now and will cut that one open afterwards to see what it looks like. Interestingly, the STP, Fram, and Purolator cross over to a different Wix filter than the one that they recommend for our Jeeps.

When you or I cut a filter open about all we can judge is can thickness, number of filter pleats, and to some degree the type of filter media. The unfortunate thing is we can't actually see or tell which is filtering to what micron or how much of the dirt they are really removing, for that we rely on oil sample testing by labs that to do that for us.

Just as couple of years ago the oil testing on the VW TDI forum discovered by accident that one of the wost things to do was install K&N air filters, because the silicon (dirt) content went up several hundred percent over normal when cars switched from OEM to K&N. It was initally thought people were not proper installing or had other problems, they just could not believe that these filter were just marjonally better then no filter. The oil sample test is the best way to determin the health of your engine and if you are useing a good/proper oil, oil filter (when switch from one test to the next), the ability to determine when to actually change the oil. You may be change to often or not often enough. Now that's what I call real important info for long term useage of a vehicle.

OK so what are the proper oil filter part numbers for our CRD's? Is it:

Mobil 1 #M1-211
K&N #HP-2009
Wix #51516 (I used this to cross reference in order to get K&N's part number)

Also, can you only get mopar filters at the dealer or is there an on-line source?

Right now, I'm leaning towards Mopar or Mobil 1. Also in the running is K&N and maybe amsoil.

As usual, any information is greatly appreciated.

Here's a few more:

Oil Filters
STP - S8316
Fram - PH8316
- TG8316

Air Filters
Wix - 42329
Purolator - A35414
K&N - 33-2233
Fram - CA8817

The interesting thing is that the Fram, STP, & Purolator oil filters all cross over to a Wix P/N 51315 :?

Now this is totally freakin confusing. When you do a search on the Wix website by vehicle and engine, it gives you 51516 as a p/n for the CRD oil filter, which they also quote for the 3.7 gas engine.

But when you search by competitor part number, using a number for a filter made specifically for the CRD, it gives you 51315 for a p/n.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?

Exactly. I went to NAPA once and asked for a filter for my diesel. They gave me the NAPA Gold 1516 filter. Guess what? It's the Wix filter with the NAPA logo on it.

It was too confusing so that's why I switched to Purolator...I KNOW these filter are made for the CRD.

I may be wrong, but the last I looked the CRD and V6 gas doesn't use the same oil filter.

Amsoil lists the same part number for both the 3.7L and CRD. Not sure what that means - just throwing it out there.

They use the same air filter, but I will check about the oil filter.

Edited for call to dealer they use different filters. The CRD has a longer filter and uses a different part number then the V6 filter.

Does that help? My book has it in both K & M for the maintance schedule.

You must have misread the statement, the Jeeps warranty is valid in Canada.

My 05 book reads as above but it also adds "or three months whichever comes first". So if you drive less than 10,000 km per 3months (which is 40,000 km per year) you will need to change the oil every 3 months.[/img]
The every 3 months thing dates back to the 1950's that I know of, just like the change the oil every 3,000 miles.

If I changed the oil in my Coupe DeVille every three months it would do more damage than good. 30 year old car has only 67,000 miles on it and now only used for special events, always allow to completly warm up.
