CRD oil change prices from the dealership....

My CRD is still under warranty so I wanted to keep the oil changes recorded through the
dealership computer system. I stop by the dealership yesterday to schedule an oil change and
the service writer is happy to help and says he can take care of me right then in about 45 minuts.
As I am giving the info to on my Liberty the writer excuses himself for a few minutes.
When he returns he asks me if I got my oil changed there last time. I say, yes. He say something
to the effect of: Ok, I thought that was you, last time you were in we changed your oil and a
Grand Cherokee CRD, after we you left our finance group said we lost $70+ on those oil changes.
He said because of the "Fancy" oil they were going to have to charge $159 per oil change
on all CRD's!!! $170+ with tax!!!! Of course, they want me to do this ever 3000 miles
too (which isn't going to happen either).

Have others found this at their dealerships?

Just curious...
Scott

Well I wouldn't pay it. I change my oil and filter for around $25-$30 bucks in materials and 1/2 hour of my time. You can do your own oil changes, keep your receipts and keep a log book. They can't question the oil changes if you keep steady records.

In addition, the severe service interval is 6000 miles between oil changes. Anymore than that is being too cautious in my book.

I think it was tjkj2002 that said it best - BOHICA; Bend Over Here It Comes Again

Your owners manual should give you the correct oil to use. It will be available in most parts stores at a price far less than anything the dealership will charge you. The oil filter from the dealership is heavily overpriced for what it is. You can do far better spending that kind of money on an aftermarket oil filter that will do a much better job. Changing your own oil is very easy and a lot cheaper than at the dealership. $170 will look better in the bank or on the Jeep. It will not void your warranty if you do your own oil changes as long as you stay with the oil and filter recommended in the owners manual.

Thanks Bugnout and Khaki-KJ for the info.

Yes, when I had them change my oil the fist time (and last) they put the little sticker on the windshield saying it would need another oil change in 3000 miles. I had already checked the owners manual and knew better. It was just about to roll over 6000 miles since I had that last oil change when this experience happened. As far as having the oil change recorded at the dealership, I figured if something did go wrong, it would make it easier if 'they' had done the changes... and I would not have to worry about pulling the reciepts to explain myself.... But, at $170 a visit, it is worth a little of my time to keep track of reciepts!!!!

Does $170 sound 'normal' at other dealers for our CRDs??? Or is this particular dealership just overcharging?
I think my first oil change there was about $50-$60.

My mother had the oil in her 3.7 changed yesterday and it only cost her $69 Canadian with tax, oil, filter and shop supplies.

I was on the phone with the dealership when I saw this thread and I asked them what they would charge for a CRD. $100 for oil  and $20 for the filter. Then there is labour, shop supplies and taxes. These are Canadian prices, so it should be a little less for the US.

This is the reason I do my own fluid changes and mainteneance. I keep telling my mother that I can work on her Jeep at the same time I do mine, but she likes going to the dealership where she bought her jeep.

I took my Jeep in for the first oil change after I bought it and the local dealer wanted 1.5 hours and $95. i went to NAPA Auto and bought 7 qts of Mobil 1 and a new filter and did it myself for $56.

So that does sound similar to my experience. Man, that is crazy. I'll be following the NAPA maintenance plan from here on out.

Thanks guys.

Scott,
What dealership are you going to,because my boss takes his CRD to a dealership in
Baton Rouge to get his oil changed(the place that stripped his plug),and i can't imagine him
paying 170 bucks, but you never know.Let me know what dealership is feeding you this, and
I'll ask him what he's paying. If it's 170,than I'll offer to change his oil on the spot for 169.99.

Brian Harris Chrysler Jeep
Keep in mind the first change they did for me was about $50 or $60 from what I remember.
They supposedly just discovered they were losing money and had to charge $159 + tax so
unless he went recently, he would have gotten the lower price.
