Air filter after 4 months - woa!

Post subject:  Air filter after 4 months - woa!
I decided to change the air filter on my wife's 06 CRD this afternoon. I know, I know, you probably think I'm wasting money changing a filter that is in this good of condition:

Is this normal for 4 months of use? She drives it about 50 miles per day in stop & go traffic.

If you do the v-6 air mod it will stay cleaner longer.

That seems filthy for 4 mo. use but with the stock airbox the filter was very susceptible to getting wet because the intake is next to the headlight; which could explain why it looked heavily soiled. After the V6 airbox mod (about $100 for new parts or try a junkyard) I've suffered no power loss and a cleaner (no moisture) airbox and filter.

Post subject:  That was normal for my 05
When it was stock. Especially the black greasy looking debris. I drove 50 interstate miles per day. When it rained, I'd also have water in the bottom of the airbox. There was a long thread about this back in mid 2006. I put a V6 airbox in from my 02 and the problem disappeared.

Same distance - 40 minutes total more per day for her due to VERY slow crawling traffic. I also take it over a nearby pass to give it the ole Italian tuneup from time to time. Mine also has the various mods shown in my signature whereas - for comparison purposes - the 06 has not been touched other than maintenance. (it also has had NO problems)

No, which is why it seemed odd to me. The little pieces of debris that may have kicked up from the drive are less concerning to me than the level of black soot that has collected on it.

The bug wings and stuff are normal but the black oily stuff isn't. She is picking up oil from somewhere like a leaking CAC hose or displaced CCV hose.

Hmmm.....well she has another few weeks before her warranty expires....probably a good time to take it to the dealer.

What does the filtered top side look like? If that's coming in on the inlet side, all the plastic ducting between the grille and airbox will be greasy, also

That's not normal. I checked our Amsoil EaA201 filter after about 20k miles and it looked like any other intake filter would for that mileage. I tapped it against the wall to see if any crud wanted to fall out, but very little did. I have the stock CRD airbox.

Unfortunately, I changed it in the autoparts store parking lot and took the picture with my cell phone camera. (I was there for parts for the 05!) But as I recall the inside looked fairly normal - but was beginning to get discolored due to the crud from the outside.

Yep, way down low and under - more likely it would be the input charge-air cooler\hose leaking - as stated previously, if it's coming in thru the ducting from the front, all that front plastic will appear similar - determine the inlet path to determine the source

I'll check once I get my 05 in running condition again. If it is the hose, any theory on how hoses fail on a car that is barely 2 years old and has never been hit or seen any trail driving?

Job offer: We are seeking a certified CRD mechanic knowledgeable of the lengthy list of ongoing problems associated with these vehicles. This job will cover 2 vehicles but will be a FULL TIME position and overtime is expected. Pay grade: Beer and Prozac.

OK, I checked it. There is more black grime on various parts of the 06 engine than there is on the 05. When I pulled back the black plastic mesh from the charge air hose (? the large top hose that looks like a radiator hose?) it was very slimy - it looked almost like it was sweating. Could this be the source of all the under the hood grime and thus air filter particulate? Perhaps somehow there is atomized particulate floating around under there?

Thanks gmctd,
I inspected it & can't find anything that looks like a puncture. Is there a test? I don't recall this hose ever being under much pressure such that I could look for a "leak" very easily. Also, any idea why this hose would start leaking? The car is like brand new and has never seen any work on it at all nor any trail driving.

All that blowby oil, plus outlet compressor temps easily approach 300* at 15psi Boost - pull the hoses, clean with hot soapy water, rinse with hot water, blow-dry with the vacuum cleaner - clean the compressor outlet, c-a cooler hose connection, etc, so no more oily surfaces - check the CCV inlet port right at the turbo inlet - look for anyplace that is leaking crankcase blowby, from the CCV puck to the turbo hoses to the c-a cooler - even loose oil filler tube cap - these 4cyl Diesels generate a lotta blowby from having only two combustion events per crank revolution - that's why you never see passenger car 4cyl Diesels much over 1.9L, too difficult to control emissions from such violence - at 2.8L, we got a monster, and you'd know it if it weren't for the twin balance shafts and the liquid filled motor supports and the AFC valve - you oughtta sit in a late GM suburban with a transplanted 3.9L Cummins 4cyl at idle................
