Help with no Odometer

I was wondering if anyone can help. I heard a chime from my instrument cluster and saw that the ABS and the brake lights were on. I took it to autozone and there was no other code other than the standard P101. I was going to change my rear brakes anyway but driving around today I noticed that my odometer is not moving either. Can anyone give me a clue as to what the problem may be?

05 CRD's have the speed sensor on the rear differential, and a speed sensor in each front wheel. Rear diff is fairly easy to get at and check. fronts a bit more difficult.

I might be able to help you out in a few days. I have the same problem. I have already replaced the sensor on the rear differential with no sucess. I have the sensor on the right front brake ordered now.

It's the wire going to the rear sensor,there is a break in one of them.You will need to peel off the protective wire loom to check.It also might be in the female connector itself.Mine had one wire that was broken right in the connector itself.Until '06 the '02-'05 KJ's(CRD included) uses the sensor in the rear diff for the speedo and ODO along with the rear ABS.The front sensors onl control the front idividual brakes for the ABS function and doe not run the speedo or ODO.

I'll crawl under there and check it out tomorrow. Your explanation of what sensors control what component was what I was looking for because I couldn't find it in the 06 Service Manual and everything became clear upon reading your explanation. Thanks again.

I had the same problem for a better part of a year, I liked it but its not a good selling feature. What I did to fix the problem was drain the rear diff, replace the oil and then remove the rear speed sensor on top of the diff and clean it really good with carb cleaner or something similar. Dry it off and stick it back in. So far I've had no problems and its working great!

That is correct. The speedo works but not the odometer, and the brake light and ABS light are on in the instrument cluster.

Well, I got my odometer to stick again today on my 400 km road trip. It did it 3-4 times, each time I turned it off and back on to clear it. The first time the ABS and brake light came on my odometer started to tick UP really fast and then I turned off the jeep to stop that. The next 3 or so times it locked the odometer up.

I will be buying a new rear speed sensor on Monday to hopefully cure this problem.

EDIT: The odometer locking up problem used to happen ALOT, I would maybe get 150 kms per tank because it locked up so much. Now its happening alot less since I change the rear diff oil.

With that statement in mind,How many of you with CRD's are actually changing the diff fluids like you are supposed to every 12,000miles?That build up of metal particals will get atracted to the sensor since it is a magnet and can mess up the signal.

It is very important that you also actually change the diff fluids after the 1st 12,000miles and that you actually remove the rear diff cover to get all of the metal particals out of the diff case from initial breakin(which 99% of you probally did not do right anyway,another whole story there).Just poping the fill plug out and sucking the gear oil out does not get rid of the built up metal particals that is normal from the gear sets.The front diff has a drain plug that is on the bottom of the diff so the metal particals will drain out unlike the rear diff.

Well, I got mine fixed today. Replaced the right front brake sensor and that turned off the ABS light and the odometer went back to working. My CRD is a 2005 model.

How much was the cost and how did they diagnose it? I have yet to look at mine thoroughly as I am just too busy until the weekend. There are no drivability isses so far but the lights on the dash bug me. I might have a fellow KJ'er scan it and see where the communication breakdown is occurring. Further updates on the weekend.

I have had my '05 in 3 or 4 times for the rear sensor. I have also had a time when it was cleared by Advance Auto and the last time it came on a day after the rear pinion and axle seals were replaced under extended warranty and cleared itself. Just waiting to see if it fails again. If I recall the rear sensor costs about $30 bucks.

The sensor cost $29.00 at the dealer. They charged me $136.00 labor to do the scan and replace the sensor...about twice what I thought it should be, but this dealer has always given me really good service, so I don't complain about the labor charges. I just hope the mechanics in the shop are getting their fair share. Good mechanics are the back bone of a dealership.

Thanks to TurboTim and TJKJ,

It was the sensor. Metal flakes from the spider gears and the ring and pinion messed up the sensor. So, the rear sensor controls the odometer, the speedometer, and the ABS. The wheel sensors up front contain generators that create their own power. Turbotim and I were puzzled as to why all three sensors were showing no power when we tested the ABS module and this explains it. This has shown me that we will lose ABS with an axle swap though, either front or back.
