So, after dealing with my pulley chirping alternator dying issue (which is still on order, actually), I had a fun first yesterday: ABS chattering. This was especially un-welcome since I wasn't braking particularly hard, was on dry pavement, and was only going about 15 mph...

Well, I got some ABS chatter in the pedal with no appreciable difference in the braking itself. I chalked it up to solar flares and parked to go shopping. After I got back and started the jeep, I had an ABS warning lamp lit... After driving about a block, the red "BRAKE" lamp under the left round gauge lit and my mileage started plummeting...as in if I sat at a stop sign, I got better mileage than driving forward :)

Who's had this before and what is it indicative of?

Dan

I haven't seen that problem -
but I'd start by checking all the brakes - especially rear calipers - several posts about them locking up.

Sounds like wheel speed sensors going bad.

Is your odometer ticking up the miles?

The ABS DTC will tell you a lot more than you know, right now - you gotta SGII?

Pretty sure it's the speed sensor...since my odo is not advancing. To make it better, my Alternator repair parts arrived and are going in tomorrow but the dealer doesn't stock the wheel speed sensor. It's a 1 day lead time from the local warehouse. It's a "special order" so I can't just call and order one to have them "magically" find one in inventory tomorrow. Also, their mark-up is about 50% on a $24 part and they require pre-payment.

I'm back to disliking dealers. They aren't willing to pre-order a <$20 part (their cost) from the in-town warehouse even if the fix is obvious. What the H$%LL good is a warranty if it's less time and effort to just plug in a new one myself.

Yep - those are specific to the CRD KJ, and not in any dealer stock - just had to replace the right wss because the bore in the knuckle was rusted, jamming the sensor - needles to say, it did not come out without a fight: drill the resident piece with a small bit, run a drywall screw down in there, use your large automotive dikes across the wss mounting screw as a lever and fulcrum to extract the piece

It could also be the rear diff sensor, mine has been replaced 3-4 times and is having problems occasionally now.

My expectation is that it is the rear diff sensor. That's the only thing that the ABS and the odometer have in common. On the 06, they put additional ABS sensors on each wheel, but the 05 CRDs just use one on the diff for ABS control (to the contrary of what my service advisor insisted): "Are you sure it has an ABS sensor on each wheel? There's no wiring harness there..." The only gratification I'm likely to get is a "toldyaso" when he calls me after the official technician diagnosis. That's okay. It'll stay at the dealer a day and I'll commute with the wife, saving a little fuel.

Faulty connector gives same symptoms as faulty sensor - replacing sensor also restores contact in the connector - which was the fix, eh?..................
