Hello,

Two days ago my oil light started coming on and chiming, it would go on and off about every 10 seconds, especially in low rpms.
Now it seems to stay on for the most part. Oil level is right below Max. When it first started 2 days ago my oil level was on the Min line.

Any thoughts?

Does your oil smell like diesel? If you have been doing a lot of idling lately, you may have had cylinder washing which allows diesel to get into the oil, although this engine is unlikely to do that if the viscous coolant heater is functioning. The other thought which pops into my head is to check if you have any water or coolant in the oil from a crack or leaking head gasket. Either way you have something weird going on with the level of the oil rising spontaneously like that. Were I in your place I would IMMEDIATELY drain the oil and go from there.

Sorry about the bad description, I added oil yesterday because I thought that was the problem, but it wasnt. The oil level didnt rise by itself.

Take an oil pressure reading with a mechanical gauge screwed to the where the oil pressure switch is, if oil pressure is OK replace the switch. If not OMG you may have big problems.

...so if you did not hear lifter clatter that is louder and higher pitch than the diesel knock, don't swing into Quick Trip and load up on their hot dogs or pop a Nitroglycerin tablet to suppress the heart palpitations.
Just follow the advise in the thread and check the oil pressure with a mechanical gauge.
Before you do the Toe Touchers at the Steeler, take a good look at the harness going to the sensor, cut, shorted to ground, or melted wires will impede the bus hand shaking to the ECM and make the signal going to the ECM sound like an attack ad coming from the political opponent of the incumbent local dog catcher who can charm even stray rabid pit bulls into the Animal Control truck.

I don't know if the gassers and the CRD's are similar in that respect, but I had that problem with my kj last winter. I ended up having to replace the oil sending unit. Fixed the problem.

Im pretty sure they are very similar. How much did it cost you? I would replace the oil pressure switch (sensor) myself, but Im not sure that that will fix the problem.

I had my CRD display same behaviour, low RPM, Oil light came on. Did an Oil Change, problem solved. I believe the oil filter failed. i was using Mopar oil filters and mobil 1 0w40

I considered it the least expensive start to diagnostics and it fixed my issue.

That was 27K ago BTW

Here is what I will do:

Since Im due for an oil change anyway, I will go ahead and change it, and while Im at it I just replace to oil pressure sensor.

Can I also replace the oil pressure sensor without having the drain the oil?

Thanks for the info guys!

Daniel

...and just keep ooozzzing until you get the sensors swapped.
You might loose 1 to 2 OZ out of the oil gallery and have to wait an extra 1/100 th of a second for the oil pressure to go to full pressure when you restart, but it is worth it :P :P :P
