Post subject:  Diesel 911...is it safe for my Libby?
I am organizing a biodiesel group. I hear about Diesel 911. Is it safe. Is anyone using it or has used it in recent years. I hope to be running straight bio by November.

I am looking at two products: diesel 911 and Stanadyne

A local VW TDI owner recommends putting Diesel 911 in every tank as the temps drop to the gel point for biodiesel. Anyone with experience in this.

Yes it is safe to use in an emergency for melting ice in the fuel, but doesn't burn well because of the alcohols in it. Adding 911 to BD will NOT keep high percentages of bio from gelling in the winter, especially in Rochester NY (guess how I know).

Thanks....Wisconsin probably has colder winters than Rochester. The material does say it is for unfreezing. Is there a product you have used for this?

Power Service sells a product called Artic Express. It only is for B20 or less. Is that what you meant?

yes .. the diesel 911 is for emergency use only ... and only use enough IF you have a diesel jelling emergency.

powerservice is fine for everytank use.

both made by the same manufacturer you'll probably find them on the shelf next to each other

Because these products are recommended for b20 only, is that what everyone runs during the winter months along with the Anti-Gel?

I have only lived in WI for 6 months. I had my my gelling problems in Tennessee where I moved from (much warmer than NY). Power Service White bottle will depress the FPP of Dino diesel by about 10-20 degrees but I have found it to be mostly ineffective in biodiesel. I have had some batches of Bio remain liquid down to 0 degrees but it still had particles of congealed stuff. The safe standard is that most bio can be used down to 20F but any lower than that and you WILL have problems, no matter what additive you use. That being said, Where there is a will there is a way. :wink:

The most Bio that you will be able to run in the cold part of winter in NY is not likley to be more than B5. Even ULSD will gel without treatment up there.

In the winter months the only thing we have available in the Troy, NY area is B5. I have had no problems using B5.

In the past I have used Stanadyne, and it worked well. Powerservice is good also.

B20 is as low as I go in the winter with the CRD, as the antigels for diesel work well. I've run B40 with 3x dose of Arctic Express in my Mercedes at -20F with no starting or plugging issues, and it doesn't have a heated filter. But since my wife drives the CRD, I make sure.

I was hoping to beat the oil companies...sounds like the only way to do it would be to get a heated fuel tank, heated line, two tank system...a bit too much trouble to save $1000.00 a year...

Don't be dissuaded from using Bio. It's just not very practical in the coldest part of winter. You can still save a lot of money during the temperate months and do your jeep a favor by giving it bio to drink. Even if you use B5 during the winter you are doing your fuel pump a favor, and it raises the cetain level.

I am waiting on the processor. I would love to run bio soon before it gets too cold. I have plenty of oil and an ongoing source of oil. Just wanted to run it all year round...alas...*S*

I have been running B5 from the pump while I SLOWLY get my processor together and the Libby definitely likes it. It quit smoking, idles smoother and just seems to run better. I am hoping to run B100 year round here. It only gets into the 30's at night a few nights out of the year and in the summer my garage gets over 130 degrees so I can probably react it with little or no heat. I wish a had a bigger lot and a less nosey HOA. I would love to set up a solar oil heater.
