Post subject:  Battery Drain

My CRD keeps on draining the battery in 2 weeks or so of no use.
I know there was an article and possible recall related to this.

The CRD is stock, no mods of any sort (and the dome lights are not on)

Any ideas?

P.S. Have a brand new Optima Battery (red) installed in August. so there is some kind of drain going on. There is nothing pugged in the cig. lighter either.

Remove one battery terminal and place a 12volt incandescent light bulb between the post and the clamp with every thing shut off. You should have a dim glow of the bulb, if the light is bright, you have something turned on or a shorted diode in the alternator. To eliminate the alternator, remove the large wire held on by the 10mm wrench size nut, put a rubber hose or tape over the lug and rerun the test with the 12 Volt light bulb. You can eliminate circuits by removing that circuits fuse.
If all you have is a dim glow, your battery is suspect of being defective.

If you leave it parked for long periods of time you can put a battery disconnect switch like this one in:

My dad leaves his truck parked for a month at a time and had the same problem. His fuel pump runs every hour or so to keep the tank pressurized and the computer stays on to monitor some systems. Not much battery drain really. Even if he start it once every 10 days it would stay charged but sometimes he just forgot so he put one of these in. He does have to reset his clock and stuff, but at least he knows his truck will start when he needs it to.

This is really treating the symptom rather than the cause so I can't endorse it too strongly. Just throwing out ideas.

I think the recall was "F-45" for the battery discharge. It was for the BCM leaving something turned on

Correct. Can't remember The TSB or recall number, but it did concern a problem with the BCM (Body Control Module) draining down the battery.

For a quick and dirty, but not always accurate, check you can go to the Jeep website. On one page, you can put in the last 8 digits of your VIN number and see of there are any recalls outstanding on your vehicle.

And there are various websites you can go to get a summation of all the TSB's/recalls that apply to the Liberty.

As far as the battery disconnect switch - believe it or not, a feature similar to this is built into the drivers side dash fuse panel (one of the things that DC did get right). There are two sets of fuses in special holders such that you can easily disconnect them without the fuse puller tool and leave them sitting in place. Owners manual lists which of these sets of fuses to disconnect if the vehicle is going to be idle for more than XX number of days, to prevent killing the battery.
